Meet Taulant, the National Coordinator (Wetlands International) for the International Waterbird Census (IWC) in Albania since 1993
My name is Taulant Bino, and I am a biologist with many years of experience working primarily in Albania's wetlands, though my work spans the entire country.
Since the 1990s, I have been the coordinator of the International Waterbird Census (IWC) in Albania, which first began in the country in 1993. Today marks nearly 32 years of conducting the Census in Albania and collecting long-term data on the status of waterbird populations that winter here.
On January 18โ19, all participants will be deployed across the 34 wetlands to collect data simultaneously, ensuring there is no duplication of figures. The data we gather is then submitted to international organizations monitoring the status of waterbird populations. These contributions, along with those from other countries, are used to assess the populations of various species, such as Dalmatian Pelicans, gulls, spoonbills, and others.
๐ Kicking off 2025 with conservation milestones! ๐ฆ
In Dec 2024, AOS, in partnership with #RAPA, #NAPA, #MTE & the local community, rehabilitated nesting beds for the #DalmatianPelican in Divjaka-Karavasta NP.
Together, weโre securing safer habitats & a brighter future for this iconic species.

Another year of birding across Albania, exploring its most remarkable birds and habitats has come to an end. As 2024 draws to a close and 2025 approaches, we want to take a moment to pause, reflect, and share a few thoughts with you, our friends, about AOSโa natural evolution of everything we have built together.
This evolution represents more than just a step forwardโit reflects our uncompromising commitment to the mission of protecting, preserving, and studying every bird species, whether endangered, rare, threatened, emblematic, or common, while tirelessly advocating for the protection of every inch of habitat and territory in Albania.
On December 4, 2024, the documentary โHilejaโ by #OlaMitre premiered with an impressive turnout of civil society organizations, donors, academics, and nature enthusiasts.
The screening was followed by an engaging discussion moderated by #BesjanaShehu, founder of AOS, highlighting key challenges facing Protected Areas in Albania.
