The only thing I don’t agree with is it paying the credit cards — I’d instead say learn to strategize with your credit cards. Because in the long run your credit will be what suffers and it’s a bigger deal than not.
Struggling to make ends meet? Read this.
If you can’t pay all your bills, you need to prioritize—starting with the Four Walls:
1. Food – Feed your family first.
2. Utilities – Keep the lights and water on.
3. Shelter – Pay rent or mortgage next.
4. Transportation – You need a way to get to work.
Cover utilities before your rent or mortgage. Why? Because in most cases, your lights or water will be shut off before you’re evicted or foreclosed on.
Nothing else—NOT credit cards, NOT medical bills, NOT student loans—comes before these four. If you don’t have enough to cover everything, take care of these first.
Never pay a debt before you buy food. If you’re in survival mode, pause paying extra on debts and focus on getting through the storm. When your income stabilizes, you can jump back into the 7 Baby Steps.
There’s hope, and you CAN get through this.
This way, you’ve satisfied the minimum monthly due, got your grocery AND maybe earned some cash back spending points if you really REALLY strategized at a high level and do this with the right card(s) and/or shopped at a qualifying store.
