A sobering view of what strategies truly work to improve our urban transport networks.
It is very much like An Inconvenient Truth.

@drdagly Our understanding from discussions with municipal financial experts is that single family homes do not pay enough taxes to cover the infrastructure & services that benefit them.
Why? In our opinion:
They vote. If you want political power you cannot increase taxes on SF homes.
@drdagly "Urban planners know this." True.
But do they show this?
Overwhelmingly, we review and approve/disapprove development proposals with no financial analysis on tax payer pocketbooks.
If we don't show it, do we really know it? 🤔🤷♂️

#YEG has spent billions on LRT and public transit.
We then expect that the percentage of people using public transit (= mode share) has increased. We should have public data to confirm or deny this expectation.
This October, record-breaking numbers of Edmontonians chose transit to save time, save money, avoid traffic, and connect with work, friends, and community.
System wide, transit ridership is now 14% higher than pre-pandemic levels.

I often hear folks say, “Donald Trump sent me a check during the pandemic.”
I want to make sure you understand this: Congress sent you a check. By the way, Joe Biden also sent you a check during the pandemic, just like I gave people relief during the Great Recession. The difference is that we didn’t put our names on it – because it wasn’t about feeding our egos or advancing our politics, it was about helping people.
So don’t be giving him credit for that. And don’t give him your vote, either. There’s only one candidate in this election who cares about you, and that’s Kamala Harris.
@pathsforppl@keithgerein A great opportunity is the High Level Bridge. Instead of making a temporary detour with the Walterdale Bridge, make it permanent. There is room for two lanes in both directions. And the HLB becomes a modal filter.

@pathsforppl@keithgerein Agreed!
And in some cases we can push car alternatives by:
1. Increasing bus/LRT frequency and capacity on alternative routes
2. Permanently closing some bridges, but leave them open to pedestrians, bikes, and buses.

🌉 Several central bridges will need serious maintenance soon. We agree with @KeithGerein: “load the LRT, build the bike lanes, and fix the funicular — anything to improve alternate modes of transportation.”

We're not putting out our #ChairATables because the Strathcona Art Walk is on, so there are LOTS of awesome activities around, including this from @sugared_spiced
