The Renters’ Rights Act has officially become law, the biggest reform to renting in almost 40 years
It ends ‘no fault’ evictions and strengthens renters’ rights to safe, secure homes.
But it’s also a major step forward for housing safety.
For the first time, Awaab’s Law and the Decent Homes Standard will apply to the private rented sector.
A major milestone for housing safety, setting clear timeframes for landlords to fix hazards like carbon monoxide, damp and mould to protect tenants’ health.
As we head towards the colder winter months, the @mhclg must ensure awareness about carbon monoxide poisoning is prioritised, especially amongst vulnerable people including the elderly, children and pregnant women.
The @mhclg has confirmed the rollout of #AwaabsLaw, introducing new legal timeframes for fixing hazards in social housing, which take effect today.
The first phase prioritises damp and mould, with further protections, including carbon monoxide and combustion risks, coming later.
By 2027, the law will extend to all remaining hazards under the Housing Health and Safety Rating System.
While Awaab’s Law is crucial in enhancing the safety and protection of tenants in households, the rollout is slow and does risk more carbon monoxide related deaths
