"I have cherished exploring the facets of evil in world literature, such as Dostoevsky’s texts, & particularly in Holocaust literature. My #MAstudents & I are able to face some of humanity’s darkest moments with faith in God & His love, justice, and righteousness.” - Dr. Lambert
ENGL 568 — Writing for Religious Audiences
Many Christian publications draw millions of readers from all walks of life, and this course prepares students to write for these large Christian audiences and market their work to editors and agents.
Courses that keep faith at the center of study are unique to the #APUMA. While students are not required to interpret works from the Christian lens, they are encouraged to consider & use the Bible as both a piece of literature & sacred text. Courses include:
ENGL 520 – Literature and Theology
Literature & Theology students read, discuss, & critically analyze literary texts with religious themes. The goal of this course is to combine the study of literary texts with insights gained from Christian theology.
Meet Dr. Carole Lambert! The author of several books & an expert on comparative literature, Dr. Lambert specializes in Holocaust studies, namely the teaching & writings of Elie Wiesel. Students tackle challenging narratives through focused analysis of literary classics.
Meet Dr. Emily Griesinger! Students learn to #growinfaith in Dr. Griesinger’s, courses. She teaches Brit lit, literature & theology, literature & medicine, and spiritual autobiography/memoir that consult the Bible for a deeper understanding of literary narratives.
Meet Dr. Chris Noble! Dr. Noble combines #faithandliterature through teaching composition, critical theory, aesthetics, and, of course, literature to show students the influence of faith on both fiction and nonfiction narratives.
The #APUMAinEnglish Program combines #faithandliterature to honor APU's long history of #faithcenteredstudy. Stay tuned to meet the faculty members who guide students through balanced, faith-based courses that prioritizes intellectual rigor & holistic growth.
"Students are not required to create or interpret texts from a Christian perspective, but framing one’s writing and research in this way is definitely an option we support, encourage, and intend to model in our own teaching and research." - Dr. Emily Griesinger
"Each course integrates faith to some degree as many literary works can display theological or Christian themes. Due of this, APU students are in the unique position to discuss literature from a faith lens, making APU one of the rarer programs of its kind." - Jeremy Byrum, MA '17
The #APUMAinEnglish Program promotes #faithcenteredstudy by exploring the various intersections between #literatureandfaith. Students do so by the critical study of texts read in courses, the ones they create as part of workshops, & how they approach pedagogy through projects.
