One of the things that blows my mind about the COVID myocarditis saga is this.

At the Cabinet Social Wellbeing Committee in March 2022, 14 ministers were marked present, including the PM. In front of them was a paper in Chris Hipkins’ name, so 14 ministers had a paragraph saying a two-dose schedule may add an unnecessary risk to under-18s.

Ministers are expected to read the papers in front of them, and yet the minute does not record anyone asking why advice dated December was only arriving in March, or why a two-dose requirement had been left in place, which you would think, should at least have prompted a question.

I also can’t locate a single email from Chris Hipkins to officials asking for a “please explain,” and what else had not been put to ministers.

Carmel Sepuloni (Chair), Willie Jackson, Damien O’Connor, Ayesha Verrall and Priyanca Radhakrishnan are still MPs, and the media have not put any questions to them about whether they read the paragraph and raised concerns. Not one.

Stranger still, the Minister of Health, Andrew Little, and Ayesha Verrall, a doctor and Associate Minister of Health, were present. You’d think they would have been deeply concerned about the delay. But no, nothing.

If it was a massive failure that ministers were not told earlier, why is there no minute recording them treating the delay as a problem and directing a follow-up? When I look at explanations offered they roll two issues into one. It may have been too late to change the outcome, but that doesn’t explain why no one is on record asking why the advice was 3 months late.
