Speaking as an immigration lawyer & Minneapolis resident the reason why Trump & DHS can’t/won’t do this is because a sober & HONEST telling of ICE’s actions in MN wouldn’t be tolerated by the American public
If the Trump admin took this more seriously, DHS would produce a sober, formal presentation every week of what ICE is doing and why, including 1-3 case studies that best demonstrate the necessity and legitimacy of these operations (assuming such things exist)
@kpottermn Of course! Whenever you see a seemingly ridiculous post presenting facts in the worst light possible, it’s always important to understand the full context and fine print
@kpottermn Following the SCOTUS ruling in Zadvydas in 2001, ICE isn’t allowed to indefinitely detain someone in cases where they are not able to execute the deportation order. AND if they were on an order of supervision they would have had to attend an annual check in w ICE
@kpottermn Many on this list may have an old removal order based on a prior criminal conviction that happened years or decades ago but are from a country that historically doesn’t accept deportees (e.g. Laos) or were granted deferral of removal under the Convention Against Torture (CAT)
A must-read message from Colin and Sophie Hortman, Mark and Melissa's children, about the untruthful conspiracy video President Trump shared yesterday:

JFC - most LEGAL immigrants have been ineligible for SNAP and many other means tested benefits since PRWORA (welfare reform) was passed in 1996 & the category of legal “qualified immigrants” was cut further by OBBBA in July to exclude refugees, asylees & humanitarian immigrants
Rep. Randy Fine: "I'm introducing a bill that says if you're not an American, you can't get SNAP. It's not just illegal immigrants that are getting some of the benefits, it's legal immigrants. And frankly if you're coming to America because you want to move here, you shouldn't be asking our taxpayers for free stuff."
Hi everyone, this is a special message. A week ago today after hearing a string of sirens go down our street I got I text from a friend asking if we knew what was going on at our children’s school. The rest of what happened at Annunciation you likely all know by now. We were lucky -- we got to hold our kids' hands, walk them to the car, and go home.
If you’d like to help this community through what is next, my wife and I ask that you give to the Annunciation Hope and Healing Fund: https://t.co/oOFVdj3tIQ
And if you’re going to pray, please pray with your feet. Vote for measures that reduce gun violence in all of our communities. Once the bullets are flying there's no good outcome. I would not wish last Wednesday on anyone.
Thank you.
Who is one of the nation’s biggest opponents of the Big, Beautiful Bill?
Pope Leo and the Catholic Church.
Twenty bishops called President Trump’s cuts to Medicaid and food stamps “an affront to the dignity of human life.”
@jacobsoboroff Jose Padilla? As in the party in the SCOTUS case Padilla v. Kentucky recognizing the right of criminal defendants to be advised of collateral immigration consequences before entering a guilty plea?? What a Freudian slip!!
A top staffer to Sen. Tina Smith emailed Sen. Mike Lee’s top staffers on Monday about “how much additional pain you’ve caused on an unspeakably horrific weekend”

Cool!! Then you should have no problem with re-establishing the parole programs at the border and other legal pathways to admit Latino immigrants likely to work in construction, service and skilled trade jobs like carpenters, plumbers and electricians
Leavitt: "Electricians, plumbers -- we need more of those in our country, and less LGBTQ graduate majors from Harvard University. And that's what this administration's position is."
@DSchrantz TBH, Democratic Joe Rogan is probably Joe Rogan!! He arguably gave the best lay person explanation of procedural due process of anyone I’ve seen online
We’re debating basic healthcare access for thousands of taxpaying Minnesotans while insurance and healthcare executives get paid millions. Make it make sense.
