SpaceX's acquisition announcement comes just days after it made its public market debut with a record breaking IPO. https://t.co/L67MRansLA (Photo: Johannes Neudecker/Picture Alliance via Getty Images)
Personally, I was honestly a little shocked Elon took SpaceX public this early.
I always thought a SpaceX IPO would happen much later - maybe 5+ years from now - especially bc Elon has always been careful about taking his companies public too soon. He knows Wall Street can be short minded, and SpaceX has always been built around missions that take decades.
But after thinking about it more, I actually understand why he did it now.
SpaceX is so much more than just a rocket company... it now has Starlink, Starship, satellite internet, global communications, national security contracts, and now a much bigger opportunity around AI infrastructure and space-based compute.
SpaceX raised $75 billion at $135 per share, making it the biggest IPO in history. That kind of capital can speed up Starship, expand Starlink, fund next-generation satellites, support AI infrastructure, and give SpaceX the firepower to move faster than anyone else.
Right now, the market is obsessed with AI. Investors are willing to pay huge premiums for companies that can own the infrastructure layer of the future. SpaceX fits that story perfectly bc it has something almost nobody else has... which is reusable rockets, global satellite coverage, Starlink revenue, Starship, and the ability to launch its own infrastructure at scale.
There is also the employee side. SpaceX has been private for over two decades. Thousands of employees helped build this company from impossible idea to one of the most important companies in the world. An IPO gives them liquidity, rewards the people who stayed through the hard years, and helps SpaceX keep attracting the best talent in rockets, satellites, AI, and engineering. All while, allowing anyone to own a piece of SpaceX's future.
Elon waited until SpaceX had real scale, real revenue, real demand, and a once-in-a-generation market window. Then he used that moment to raise an insane amount of capital without giving up control of the mission.
I honestly thought SpaceX would wait until Mars was closer... Elon probably saw something different.
Maybe he realized the next phase of SpaceX is so big that waiting another five years would actually slow the mission down. And if the goal is to build the future faster - Starlink, Starship, AI in space, and eventually Mars - then this IPO starts to make a lot more sense.
Especially in the current environment we are living in today.

Rocketmaker SpaceX began trading on the Nasdaq Friday, boosting Elon Musk’s fortune to an estimated $1.1 trillion.
The idea of anyone becoming a trillionaire seemed unfathomable even just a couple years ago.
Here's a closer look at Musk's race to the top: https://t.co/FaIFthbWYG
Luego aparece el grito populista: “tax the rich”.
Today, @SpaceX (Nasdaq: SPCX) makes its public market debut with a $75Bn offering (pre-greenshoe) at $135 per share, marking the largest IPO in history.
Congratulations to the SpaceX team. We are honored to serve as joint lead bookrunner and sole stabilization agent.
“It is certainly hard to believe that a little company that started in a warehouse in El Segundo is now going public with the largest IPO ever.”
Only in America. Congratulations to @elonmusk@SpaceX. This is the American Dream 🇺🇸💪🚀
There has been a lot of hand wringing on the appropriate valuation of SpaceX. Some large institutions believe SpaceX can only be valued at half what the market seems to be willing to pay for it. Others are claiming it has 15X appreciation ahead of it.
Almost all of this difference of opinion comes down to how comfortable you are modeling beyond 2030 and what valuation method you use.
2030 valuation using a traditional Gordan DCF produces a very different result than a 2040 EV/EBITDA Multiple. Both have pros and cons. Most analysts don’t really discuss this and lead with a headline number.
We are very comfortable modeling out to 2040, as large portions of what SpaceX is proposing is real world infrastructure, which provides modelable physics constraints to anchor against.
The analysis we released today explores this in-depth, its open to the public all the way through IPO. I highly encourage you check it out prior to then.

We’ve run 5,000 monte carlo runs across 500 variables (real number, even though it sounds fake) and three valuation methods.
This video is of a 3D cloud chart showing every simulation outcome expected in valuation output across two of the most impactful variables to the model when using an EV/EBITDA multiple from 2026 to 2040.
The horizontal axis is the steepness of the orbital data center demand S-curve.
The vertical axis is the rate at which chip compute efficiency becomes cheaper.
Each of the 5,000 dots is one simulated future; green dots are the ones where SpaceX's 2040 value clears the $1.77T IPO line, over time.
Under EV/EBITDA valuation through 2040, 96% of our simulated futures clear the expected IPO price once the bell rings Friday.
We aren’t publishing this publicly to tell investors what the stock is worth, we’re publishing this to help investors understand the world of outcomes, what the fundamentals suggest through 2040, and what frankly most analysis simply won’t share.
SpaceX is a generational company working on long term infrastructure harnessing a domain no one has been able to tap in so far: space.
It deserves doing the work as an investor. because this in not financial advice.
The cleanest way to hold SpaceX is a bond stapled to a call option (AI-Compute); Starlink is the bond, the near term SatCom annuity that funds the next flywheel.
Understand the world of outcomes and take your position accordingly.
Comparables and P/E won't take you far enough.
