@hazl11_michael 1. National Insurance =tax on workers and employers. sweetener is if you pay it for enough years, you get a fixed amount back no matter how much you actually paid over those years.
2. The law that set the system up lists it in the section headed BENEFITS
@roberthenryjohn I have seen another post saying you started work at 15. So if you retired in 2002, you were 58. So what did you live off until the state pension age of 65?
@billygo59741434@Jenny_1884 So what is the definition of a benefit then, Billy? What has changed since universal state pension was enacted in 1946? https://t.co/U07HFmwybE
Or has the dictionary definition of benefit changed?
Or is it that “living off benefits” is an offensive term for you?
@Lyndonx@dbrownless79 I worked in environmental health so have seen this in action. Councils do engage with owners first and try to persuade them to sell or rent. Forced sale is an option and like EDMO is more a lever to get owner to sell/rent out rather than actually used in practice.
@dbrownless79@Lyndonx I am guessing that most of the people posting on here are unaware that these powers were introduced in 2004. Empty properties can and do blight neighbourhoods because a significant number are just left to rot. Not fair on neighbours
@Casserly_Rock@willieckerslike The BBC interviewed a chap who’d been evacuated:
Reporter: “Are you worried about your safety?” Man: “Oh, no. It all seems to be under control.” “What about being unable to return to your home?” “I’ve got the clubs in the car, so I’m off to play golf this afternoon.”
@Sandybadders@dontdelay Sandy - think you are referring to contracting out of SERPS. You (and employer) still paid NI but at a lower rate if contracted out, so it didn’t mean you weren’t making NI contributions. SERPS was supposed to give an additional pension over and above the basic.
@JASouth_1965@paoladiana John - I worked in local government so I know how the tiers work and how responsibilities are divided between them.
They are independent legal entities so you cannot blame a district council for decisions made by a county council.
@NicTheGee@alexmassie Add a sprinkling of Norman nobility- Robert the Bruce = Robert de Brus after all, and English and Flemish immigrants invited into the Burghs, you end up with a mongrel nation in the same way as England.
@NicTheGee@alexmassie What we might as well call the Welsh and English kingdoms straddled the modern border, with the latter probably establishing English’s sister language, the Scots tongue, in the lowlands.
@NicTheGee@alexmassie Nick - as a result of angry with you, I have done a quick bit of research. In early medieval times, the area that eventually became Scotland was a patchwork of kingdoms and peoples; pre-Celtic Picts, “Welsh” and “Irish” celts, “English” and Norse.
@janeharding@SandyofSuffolk Were you contacted out of SERPs and or State Second Pension because you paid into a private pension? If so, you paid a lower rate of NI
