After proclaiming that He is the Light of the World Jesus makes a curious statement in John 8:21. He says He will be leaving them and they will not be able to find Him. They won’t be able to follow Him. The crowds have no idea what Jesus is talking about so He has to explain it to them.

He says He is from above and does not belong to this world. If they don’t believe Jesus is who He says He is, they are going to die in their sin. Well this gets their attention. They don’t want to die in their sin so in vs 25 they demand to know:
“Who are you?”

The people don’t understand when He refers to his Father but Jesus makes it very plain to them.

“So Jesus said, “When you have lifted up the Son of Man on the cross, then you will understand that I Am he.”
John 8:28 NLT

It’s amazing Jesus says this long before it happens. When Jesus is eventually crucified how many in the crowd will remember this moment? How many will believe? How many will still refuse to believe and die in their sin?
