Di Amerika, harga buku hanya setara satu jam kerja. Upah minimum di sana sekitar $15/jam, sedangkan harga buku $15-20. Artinya mereka bisa membeli satu buku hanya dengan 1 jam kerja, seperti halnya kita membeli es teh jumbo di pinggir jalan.

Di Jepang, satu buku juga bisa dibeli dengan satu jam kerja. Upah minimum disana sekitar ¥1000-1200/jam. Harga buku ¥900-1300.

Di Jerman, satu buku = satu makan siang. Hanya dengan 2 jam kerja.

Di Inggris, satu buku bisa dibeli hanya dengan setengah jam kerja. Buku bukan jadi barang yang harus ditimbang antara 'beli atau tidak' buku sudah menjadi bagian dari kehidupan sehari-hari seperti roti.

Di Norwegia, negara ikut menanggung harga buku, negara hadir memberikan subsidi dan distribusi yang merata, karena mereka percaya: bangsa yang cerdas dimulai dari buku yang mudah disentuh.

Di Malaysia. Buku masih bisa dijangkau hanya dengan 2 jam kerja.

Singapura. Satu buku bisa dibeli dari sisa makan siang.
