Deut 8:1-5 speaks to the heart.
Deut 8:6-9 speaks to the walk.
Deut 8:10-18 speaks to what happens when God is on back burner.

“He humbled you, causing you to hunger and then feeding you with manna, to teach you that man does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of the LORD.” (Deu 8:3)

Our very sustenance comes from Him. Hear the lessons He’s teaching.

We see in Deuteronomy 8:10-18 that forgetting God leads to the old ways, the old nature kicking in.

Give him your heart and actions & do not forget.

Assess your walk with God.
• Am I thankful?
• Am I prideful?

“Be careful to follow every command I am giving you today.” (Deu 8:1-5)

There was no wiggle room to pick & choose.

What has God asked of you that you’re taking liberties on?
Following him is not a matter of rote nor legalistically following, it is a heart condition.

In Deuteronomy 8 Israel was told not to forget the Lord. Yet, they went toward ingratitude, then rebellion.

What can we learn from them?

“If you forget, forget GOD, I'm on record right now as giving you firm warning: that will be the end of you; I mean it—destruction. You'll go to your doom—the same as the nations who wouldn't obey the Voice of GOD, your God.” (Deu 8:19-20)

Beware this path. Full devotion.

In Genesis 28 Jacob makes a vow placing conditions on his worship of God. Note how he puts his desires ahead of God.
We will read that God had growth in mind for Jacob.

God will be his God, but in God‘s way. Consider as you read the next chapters.

In Gen 28:10–15, Jacob has a dream. The Abrahamic covenant is confirmed.

Why is God speaking in a dream?
So far in Genesis, we see God uses dreams for non-worshipers, so what’s up with Jacob? Did Jacob not worship God?

As you explore this consider Jacob’s response to the dream.

How do we have Vulnerable Honesty?

Does God need to grow you in this area?
1. Be honest with yourself regarding the source of your desires.
2. Be honest with God regarding the source of your desires

This week pray honestly, in humble vulnerability.

Gen 27:41-28:9 tells us more about the results of Jacob stealing Esau’s blessing. Family rivalry continues its course. Husband/wife/brothers, all continue the family drama.

Their solution is often ours, manipulate to your desire.

How did would that work for them?

Let’s talk about.. Exchanging our desires for God‘s desires.

It’s easy to do. In community God may stir in a few who share. This should be a normal occurrence.

Be aware of your own desires so they don’t supplant God‘s will.. and then calling it God‘s desire.

How do we discern?

Your Kingdom come with the understanding that we are leaving behind every other kingdom, including our own, including democracies, including any borders, geographic borders that are set up in this world, God, we leave all those things behind for the sake of Your Kingdom.

Are you finding rest in the Word of God?

“Jesus: I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live even if he dies. Do you believe this?

Martha: Yes, Lord, I believe that you are the Christ.” (Jhn 11:25-27)

Rest in His truth, even in difficult times.
