Good news: Study finds that the neurodiversity/autism rights movement has shifted mainstream media coverage away from "cause and cure" narratives toward how to make life better for #autistic people, using @washingtonpost as an example. https://t.co/klI42IHQ5d
🚨🧵Here’s a thread to cover some additional thoughts on the new #AutismSpeaks logo (and on them):
You know that Autism Speaks didn’t design their logo with the autistic community because, if they had, we would have instead focused them on redesigning their organization first.
@NeuroRebel I don't know if I would call it self hatred, but I do tend to search for something I did wrong, even if I didn't do anything wrong. The frustrating thing is never knowing for sure what caused it. Like many who already commented, I find comfort in retreating to my inner world.
@steve_asbell Especially in a downtown area, there are way too many things to look at in way too short a time. I have to lie down in a quiet place after I drive downtown. I'm so overwhelmed that I can't focus on anything.
@NeuroRebel Wow, I can relate to so many of these comments. Esp the hair pulling. I get frequent infections from pulling hair out of my body and I had to be hospitalized once. I worry most about eye infections.
I recently did a two-part interview for Learn From Autistics. Part 1 covers the transformational aspects of travel and part two is about my travel coaching and advocacy work. Part 1: https://t.co/vE0c4PKABA and part 2: https://t.co/i1rvIIy5G5.
I started a program called Autism Connections and we are educating the neurotypical community in our region about autism, from #ActuallyAutistic voices. I created a google form in case you want to add your voice. https://t.co/RbMp7pp8o6. #AskingAutistics
I'm traveling around my home region a bit more this year. I'll be spending next week in Lansing, my old college town. It will be interesting to see how it's changed and I'm especially excited to get ice cream at the dairy store! https://t.co/OLQBz0cdEF #autism#travel#Lansing
#Oliverscampaign#AskingAutistics so many teenage #autistic children struggle through puberty with many being prescribed psychotropic medications THIS IS NOT THE ANSWER we need to ask autistic adults what would have helped them & act on it Please STOP overmedicating #STOMP
I'm experiencing really positive outcomes from being openly autistic. I feel more accepted & included, and I'm making so many connections. There is something about authenticity that people really respond to. Do you feel you can be your authentic self in society? Why/why not?
Check out this podcast episode I did on the Introverts Talking Business podcast! We talk about why building deep connections has allowed me to grow a very popular Meetup for autistic adults & how travel can build confidence and independence. Listen at https://t.co/WKsRDZvhSM.
"The problem with ABA is that it addresses the child’s behaviours, not the child’s needs. ABA is not designed to consider the child’s feelings or emotional needs." Best article I've read about why ABA is abusive.
I'm looking for domestic (US) trip ideas. Has anyone been to San Diego? It looks like there is a lot of fun stuff to do there. If you had to pick one thing to do in #SanDiego, what would it be? @BalboaPark with the zoo and museums looks really fun! #autism#travel
ASC's vision is for every #autistic person in the state of Colorado to have access to and find success in competitive, quality and integrated #employment. We believe that inclusion is not just involvement, but also a sense of belonging. Find out more: https://t.co/cSg2OK8cfj
A new bill is being developed to help build capacity for states to provide home and community based services #HCBS including support for direct workforce. @AutismSociety is excited to support such a bill @ccd4pwd@TheArcUS@NHeLP_org
