The spring migration of river herring is well underway in Maine’s rivers, marking one of nature’s great seasonal spectacles.
These returns are a powerful reminder of the scale of river herring migrations and the importance of restoring access to historic spawning habitat.
ASF hosted a reception last night in Ottawa to recognize the Government of Canada’s $81.7 million investment in the national Atlantic salmon conservation strategy. MPs, Senators, hill staff, and DFO Minister Joanne Thompson joined ASF at the National Arts Centre.
Salmon season is finally upon us (or almost!), and the first bright salmon of the year are beginning to enter rivers across the region.

The Miramichi River was once a top Atlantic salmon river. In 2024, fewer than 5,000 salmon returned (~90% decline from peak).
Striped bass are up ~10,000% since the 1990s; smolt survival has dropped from 50% to under 9%.
