There's a lot of noise about AI and journalism right now. A lot of it misses the point.
AI can summarise. It can aggregate. It can produce a passable first draft of a story that's already been written somewhere else.
What it can't do is travel to Warrenton in the Northern Cape and sit with Elsie Modise, a founder of a community patrol group called Wanya Tsotsi, to understand why residents frustrated by cable theft and slow police response times are taking the law into their own hands. It can't find Rudi Vertuin - someone actually stopped by the group - and ask him what it felt like. It can't weigh those perspectives against a social scientist's warning about where community policing ends and vigilantism begins.
That story, published this week by our community journalist Calay Blaauw, is exactly what we mean by original reporting. It exists because a journalist went somewhere, spoke to real people, and brought back something new.
At Explain, we've been thinking hard about this. We've always done original reporting — but we've also curated and summarised the news, because that's what our audience needed. In an age of Gemini search summaries though, that's no longer enough on its own. Audiences don't just need news summarised — they need to know what's important beyond what they even know to search for. That means original reporting, human context, and stories told by people embedded in communities.
That's what AI can't replace. And that's what we're doubling down on.

" For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through the endurance taught in the Scriptures and the encouragement they provide we might have hope."

A flower does not fight to prove it is beautiful. A river does not argue for its place in the world. The sun does not ask for permission to rise.
It simply becomes what it was always created to be.
Maybe that's your reminder today.
You do not have to perform for acceptance.
Some of us have spent so much of our lives trying to earn what was ours from the very beginning.
“Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart." - Jeremiah 1:5

Before I knew my name, before I drew a breath
He was making ways for me
Now and everyday, in each and every step
He is making ways for me
When my heart is full of doubt
Feels like faith is running out
I've come too far to turn around
I know
God will work it out
God will work it out
One thing I know
One thing I've found
God will work it out, woah
Oh, yes, He will
