@MrC0Le The model in this case is the geometry (shape of the surface) and shaders (colors, reflectivity, etc)
Rig is the systems that allow to animate the model (joints, controls, deformers, corrective shapes, etc)

NLA was so confusing when I first tried to use it...
Learning it is certainly worth it though, can't animate without layers๐

I made two extreme poses, then baked all cape controls on aimspace locators, offset animation of those locators in time (closer to the end of cape - more frames of offset), tweaked locator's translates in the graph editor and baked it all back to controls)

I've only written a simple reparent script so far, still long way to go:)
Could you give an example of anything that would be better done with python than MEL? I'm a beginner animator, and haven't found courage to start with python yet๐
