The problem is that classic diplomatic reprisals appear to be a cost Russia has already factored into the risk of conducting sabotage operations in Europe.

Expelling diplomats, closing Russian institutions, restricting the movement of Russian diplomatic personnel - all of this may be justified, but it clearly does not deter Moscow. If the expected price of another act of sabotage is simply another round of diplomatic expulsions, Russia knows the price in advance and can decide it is worth paying.

Deterrence requires something different: presenting Russia with a bill it did not expect, in a currency it actually values, and at a cost significantly higher than the anticipated benefits of sabotage.

That requires political decisions, imagination and courage. Symbolic retaliation requires none of these...thus it doesn't work.

Tak wygląda przystanek Kanał Gocławski, a raczej to co z niego zostało, na alei Stanów Zjednoczonych po nocnym rajdzie kierowcy BMW, który jak się okazało miał zabrane prawo jazdy.

Ukraine has officially notified @icao that the Russian airspace is not safe for civilian aviation because of increased military activity. We urge everyone to avoid it.

Russia has been deliberately ignoring the existing threats as a result of its aggression against Ukraine, which has already led to several incidents in the past years.

Against the backdrop of Russia’s drastic escalation of terror against Ukraine, Russian airspace is becoming increasingly unsafe.

This is our responsible decision to notify ICAO and all airlines, and governments to take caution — even if Russia refuses to fulfill its responsibility to inform them. We want to prevent unintended incidents.

The war is returning home to Russia. Ukraine exercises its inherent right to self-defense under Article 51 of the UN Charter.

Just so people understand: It is Trump’s Iran war that is driving the debt and interest rate crisis. Asian economies are tanking because they are starved of oil, that, in turn, is punishing their currencies, and Japan in particular is selling our bonds to try to prop their currency up.

APPLEBAUM: I live in Poland. I've lived here on and off for 30 years. I was here during period of NATO expansion.

I can tell you that NATO expanded because countries in this part of Europe felt physically threatened by Russia.

They asked to be part of NATO, they even had to beg and plead to be let in. Initially, United States was very reluctant.

NATO expansion was done all the way through with Russian participation and acknowledgment.

Initially, there was even a NATO-Russia partnership that was created.

There were constant attempts to show Russia that it was a defensive alliance and not an offensive one.

At one point, there were almost no American tanks left in Europe. There was no arming of countries in Eastern Europe, and that happened only after 2014.

So a lot of effort was made to create NATO as a security zone, as a zone of peace, and not focus it on some kind of attack on Russia.

For quite a long time, Putin accepted this. There have been recent releases of documents from '90s in which he doesn't talk about NATO, or complaining about NATO expansion.

That was a later argument he began to make down the road when he needed a casus belli, explanation for why he was invading Ukraine.

So, Russia successfully sold a very false story about the war being somehow provoked by NATO.
