Observations from Monday at Birkdale....
1. Firm and fast. Yup. Not sure I've ever seen an Open course this brown and firm at the start of the week. Really makes players think, on all shots.
2. Birkdale is a great venue. It ticks a lot of boxes. Course, setting, area, visuals, layout, routing etc. It's going to surprise and impress a lot of fans this week.
3. Tee shot strategy is fascinating. Take on bunkers and the corners of doglegs, and risk running through, or lay back and leave a longer approach. Players have that decision 9 or 10 times here. I'm going to write more on this tomorrow.
4. Last Chance Qualifier. Wasn't sold on it but it was great. Noticeable atmosphere on a Monday morning, good crowds and interesting to see competitive shots on the course.
5. The 15th hole. The finish to the course is so exciting but I think the 15th is too extreme. Watching Angel Hidalgo (in the qualifier) bump a shot from right of green into the hill and it just popped up and rolled back towards him 10-15 yards. I think it's going to be a controversial hole this week, R&A may feel pressure to move the tee up on multiple rounds.
6. Watching golf. All Open venues are iconic but this is a particularly good one to watch golf. Almost every green is surrounded by dunes fans can stand. My favourite spots to watch are 2 green, 5 green, 12 tee, 15 tee and 17 green. Take note.
7. The first tee. The Open has lots of traditions but the idea of the mini-amphitheatre on the first tee has become one of my favourites. The ovations, the tight surrounds and intimate feel, the view for those who get there early. Will do my best to get in that stand on Thursday.
8. The Scouse accents. I'm a Liverpool fan and used to it but I love hearing it. Shout out to Joe, my bus driver. A blue (Everton fan) but lovely chat en route to my car.
9. This is such an underrated area of golf. Birkdale obviously but add in Formby, Hillside, Wallasey, Hoylake, Southport and Ainsdale and Lytham. I played Formby tonight at sunset and it was incredible.
With the Houston Open potentially becoming a Signature Event & the Chevron Championship moving to the city— is Houston the next great golf destination?

My dad passed away that morning. Roller coaster of a day to say the least. One of the worst days of my life but the Aggies gave us all a little joy when we needed it most. #gigem@aggiembk

Most private clubs are very open to hosting pros once or twice but becoming a member is a different story.
Usually we need to know a few non pro members to start the process. We are better off than a random sales guy but it’s not as easy as some might think.
Unless you’re REALLY famous. Then it’s different obviously

The worst part of college football discourse on X is most of the best college football teams/brands come from low tier academic schools (Alabama, Georgia, Oregon, Texas A&M, Oklahoma, Ole Miss, Ohio State, Indiana, Texas Tech, LSU, Miami, BYU, Clemson, etc.).
This means most of the fans/alumni of these schools are extremely unintelligent.
When highly intelligent Notre Dame fans attempt to engage with these fan bases, they are simply too stupid to understand what is going on. This makes it very difficult to convince these people of facts that are painfully obvious to anyone with an IQ over 90.
Michigan and USC fans are obnoxious don’t get me wrong, but at least they can read and write.
Thoughts?
If you haven't listened to college football radio, you're missing out.
Who needs neutral TV broadcasters when you can have two of the biggest homers possible complain about every call.
