Astronomers Just Captured the Sharpest-Ever Look at Betelgeuse’s Wild, Bubbling Surface
Forget the calm, nearly perfect sphere of our Sun. Betelgeuse — that famous orange-red star marking Orion’s shoulder, roughly 600 light-years away — is a colossal red supergiant almost 800 times wider than the Sun. And its surface is pure chaos.
Using the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) in Chile, astronomers have just released one of the most detailed images yet of this stellar giant’s face. What they see is no smooth ball of fire. Instead, the surface is covered in enormous, irregular bulges and dips — the result of vast bubbles of scorching gas rising from the star’s depths and bursting onto its outer layers. These turbulent movements create the so-called “hot spots” that make Betelgeuse look like a boiling cauldron of plasma.
But the new data threw a curveball. The brightest hot spot glowing on the latest images was already visible in observations taken seven years earlier. That’s far longer than current models say such features should survive. Something is keeping it stubbornly in place.
One intriguing possibility? A nearby companion star, recently hinted at by observations from the European Southern Observatory’s Very Large Telescope (VLT). Its orbit might be stirring or stabilizing these long-lived hot spots.
Researchers are also hunting for clues about Betelgeuse’s dramatic “Great Dimming” of 2020, when the star suddenly lost a significant chunk of its brightness. Could these surface features be connected?
There’s an even bigger reason to keep watching. Betelgeuse is nearing the end of its life. Sooner or later — possibly within our lifetimes, though no one can say exactly when — it will explode as a supernova. When that happens, the blast will shine so brilliantly it will be visible from Earth in broad daylight.
“Its inevitable fate is to become a supernova, so it’s especially interesting to know what it looks like right now,” said lead author Bill Dent, an astronomer at ESO.
We’re basically staring at a ticking stellar time bomb in unprecedented detail — and every new image brings us closer to understanding how a star this massive lives… and dies.
