"On behalf of the members of ATU Canada, we mourn the loss of Stephen Lewis and honour a life that proved words, wielded with courage and conviction, are among the most powerful tools we have.
He gave our labour movement and all Canadians one of its greatest gifts: the belief that moral clarity, spoken plainly and without apology, could move the world.
To Michele, to Avi, to Ilana and Jenny, and to the entire Lewis family: our deepest condolences. His voice will not be forgotten."

ATU Canada Mourns with ALPA Union Family Following Tragic Loss
ATU Canada stands in solidarity with our ALPHA Airline Pilots Association family following this devastating loss. Two workers went to work and didn't come home. That grief is felt by every union family across this country. We also hold in our hearts all those who were injured and affected by this tragedy, and we hope for their full recovery.
Transit and transportation workers of all kinds face risks on the job that the public rarely sees. Workplace safety is not a talking point. It is a matter of life and death, and moments like this remind us why we fight so hard for every protection, every standard, every law that keeps workers safer.
Our hearts are with the families, the crews, and all those who loved these two pilots. We are grateful to the first responders who answered the call.
In solidarity,
John Di Nino
National President, ATU Canada
Investing in public transit cuts emissions, lowers the cost of living, and improves our quality of life.
Today, we're releasing our transit plan to make getting around our communities easier, safer, and more affordable.
Read our plan and join us in building the public transit system we deserve.
This one is for every brother, sister. and ATU sibling who was assaulted on the job and kept showing up.
Every worker who testified, marched, called their MP, and refused to stay silent. Bill C-14 has passed. Federal law now protects all of you. You did this.

This Black History Month, ATU Canada is proud to share ATU International’s profile of Black leaders who have strengthened our union, starting with Karen Miller of Local 1700 Greyhound.
When Karen Miller began at Greyhound more than 35 years ago, she was told as a woman of colour that she would never drive a bus. She refused to accept that barrier. She became a Greyhound driver, joined ATU Local 1700, and immediately set to work building power for her co workers.
Karen served as a Shop Steward and Driver Instructor before members elected her as Local 1700’s first female Vice President and Assistant Business Agent. In 2016, workers placed their trust in her again, electing her as the Local’s first female President and Business Agent. She is now serving her fourth term.
Through the chaos of the pandemic, corporate pressure, and tough bargaining fights, Karen has kept Local 1700 united and delivered strong contracts for members. Her leadership shows what is possible when working people join together and fight for their union.
ATU Canada thanks Karen Miller for her steadfast commitment to Local 1700 and to transit workers everywhere.
President John Di Nino, alongside IVPs Sforza and Wilson, joined ATU Canada members this week for advanced arbitration training led by ATU International and Watson Palmer Labour Lawyers.
This training is about sharpening our tools to defend collective agreements, support our stewards, and hold employers to account.
Shout out to the regional locals who put in the work: ATU 279, 946, 966, 1320, 1557, 1767, and 1760.
Strong unions are built by members who invest in their skills and each other. #thereispowerinaunion
This week, the ATU National Executive Board came together for our semi annual meeting, and we were proud to welcome Crystal Hanley in her new role as ATU Western Representative.
Crystal brings frontline experience, strong union values, and a clear commitment to fighting for transit workers across the West. Her perspective will strengthen the Board’s work as we push for safer jobs, fair funding, and real respect for our members.
Welcome to the National Executive Board, Crystal. Solidarity.
I am proud to be joined by ATU 113 President Marvin Alfred in recognizing and encouraging ATU members from across Canada to submit their photos and memorabilia, both past and present, to our National Archive project.
Shout out to Brian Connelly for dropping off this 80-year-old booklet documenting the first 60 years of service of the TTC.
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. reminded us that dignity on the job is a civil right, not a privilege.
On MLK Day, ATU Canada honours his call for economic justice, strong unions, and collective action. The fight for fair wages, safe work, and respect for transit workers is part of the same struggle.
Organize. Stand together. Keep pushing for justice at work and in our communities.
We are excited to announce our first monthly winner to our ATU Canada National Archive Iniatitive...
Congratulations to GO Transit Operator Terry Clifton.
We encourage all of our ATU Canada members, past, present, and families, to submit your ATU Canada photos of you on the job and/or photos of your ATU memorabilia.
Warm wishes to our ATU Canada members celebrating Orthodox Christmas today.
To our sisters, brothers, and siblings marking the day, we wish you peace, good health, and time with family and community. Thank you for the work you do every day to keep our communities moving and connected.
Merry Orthodox Christmas.

From all of us at ATU Canada, we wish you a safe and restful holiday season.
To every transit worker keeping our communities moving over these holidays and every rider who stands with us in the fight for strong public transit, thank you.
This season is a reminder that solidarity is our greatest strength and our greatest gift.
Wishing you and your families peace and time to recharge.
In solidarity,
John Di Nino, President, ATU Canada.
Transit workers like all workers, deserve to go to work and come home safe. Full stop.
On Transit Worker Assault Awareness Day, we’re calling out the rising violence facing operators in Toronto and across the country. No worker should be punched, threatened or attacked for doing their job. Not one more.
ATU Canada continues to push every level of government to take this crisis seriously and protect the frontline workers who keep our cities moving. Transit worker safety is public safety.
To all our members, transit riders, communities, and everyone marking the Festival of Lights, we wish you a Hanukkah filled with light, safety, and peace. Chag Sameach from ATU Canada President John Di Nino and the Executive Board.
