The Scavenger [2026]
Directed By: Qin Pengfei
Is on iQIYI in the states and other regions in the world. I repeat, it is on iQIYI and other regions in the world. You can sub for a pint of beer and is cheaper than ya Funko Pop’s.
With that out of the damn way. Is a very simple premise (sister gets kidnapped by evil
music executive) and clearly inspired by The Furious even in the choreography.
You see the ankle push kick offs on the ground to multi bodies and even this scene is way to similar when he is looking for his daughter in the furious down to the car hit (this scene is edited down) fun film but you can clearly see Ashton Chen is not fully use to this style even on the floor movement side of things in terms of the slide.
Seems like he is hesitating.
I feel like Liu Fengchao should have been the lead for this because he is actually use to this style of choreography and movement.

Stunned. Stupefied. In utter disbelief. That’s the only way I can describe my state of mind after seeing the things Robert Pattinson just pulled off in Primetime (🌟🌟🌟🌟). Five, ten, fifteen years from now, we will all look back on Robert Pattinson’s 2026 in awe. We will tell our kids. We will tell our grandkids. Pattinson is giving us a one-year run for the ages & Primetime might be the best performance he’s ever given. This is a moment in time I don’t want to let go of or move on from too quickly - I want to hold onto this for a minute: a truly gifted actor in the prime of his career making all the right career decisions at the exact right time right before our very eyes. I’m so incredibly grateful to witness Robert Pattinson.
I’m not going to spend a lot of time on plot here because I think the plot is relatively straightforward and speaks for itself: the year is 2006 & Pattinson plays Chris Hansen, host of To Catch A Predator. We’re introduced to Pattinson’s Hansen at an inflection point for the show. The real-life Jeff Zucker pulls Hansen into his office & explains to Hansen that To Catch A Predator is moving up the primetime schedule & will face off directly against Lost. This inspires Hansen to turn the volume up on everything related to the show, inconclusive hiring “Decoy Dan”, Dan Plum (Skyler Gisondo) to serve as fresh blood to help lure in predators. The whole crux here is that expectations & pressure on Hansen become unbearable & he unravels as the show grows.
I think the success of the film is multifaceted. This is director Lance Oppenheim’s first scripted narrative feature film & I thought he directed the hell out of this movie. With the help of cinematographer David Bolen, Oppenheim weaves in countless hallucinatory effects through different framing techniques, different lenses, different colors, and most of all - extreme use of the close-up, something that is so well-suited for Pattinson. I also thought the film’s score helped ratchet up the anxiety & increase tension.
But the reason this film fascinates me is because it’s so complicated. There is no black and white good guy in this movie. This is a film based on massive gray areas. On the one hand, there’s the social commentary behind how morally just Hansen’s work really was: yes, he’s catching predators, but at what cost & for what reason? It forces us as an audience to confront the conflict that To Catch A Predator presents, which is merging social justice with reality TV & public shaming.
All of which dovetails perfectly into the character study around Hansen. I found the creative choices behind Hansen’s representation to be extremely bold. While the movie’s social commentary is bathed in nuance, I thought Hansen is presented in relatively one-dimensional fashion…soulless. Robotic. Metal. Obsessed with fame, fortune & himself. All of which is to suggest that while To Catch A Predator serves a noble purpose, in the hands of a narcissist like Chris Hansen, the best of intentions are weaponized. It’s the exact reason why this movie will turn a lot of people away & the exact reason some might be offended.
At day’s end, the performances from Pattinson & Gisondo sort of mask any issues I may have had with 1) how Hansen is portrayed and 2) the social commentary this film presents. I don’t know how either Pattinson or Gisondo could be better. Gisondo perfectly captures a lost, confused, helpless young actor who is mercilessly manipulated by those more powerful than him. But then there’s Pattinson. The charisma is off the charts. The way this man holds a close frame is unparalleled. His line delivery, his eye contact, all of it is acting of the highest order. I think the thing that inspires me most about Pattinson is his sheer unpredictability as an actor. That’s precisely the perfect word to encapsulate his performance here - unpredictable.
Do I think Pattinson has enough juice in this film to carry him to an Oscar nomination? Unquestionably yes.
The Scavenger (除暴之路), out on iqiyi, is Qin Pengfei's newest starring Liu Fengchao. He grapplefucks his way through goons to save his sister from evil Kpop execs.
It's cool, I think it's rare to see this kind of modern chinese DTV where the MC has a distinct fighting style.
