Today's event at the Cricket Club in Gaborone was a huge success, filled with energy, heritage, and empowerment! We saw fantastic participation in the revival of our traditional games like Koi and Diketo, enjoyed an invigorating aerobics session, and were inspired by the insightful spreeches by the Director of Sport Ministry of Sport And Arts Botswana, Chair Person of WASBO - Women&Sport Botswana and a keynote from Mr. Stanley Mutoya.
It was truly a unifying experience, bringing together women from all walks of life welcomed by the Cricket women to honor our traditions and champion gender equality.
A big thank you to our partners: Ministry of Sports and Arts, Botswana National Sport Commission, Botswana National Olympic Committee and all the ladies that showed up! You are the true reflection of empowered women! Thank you for making this memorable celebration possible.

WOMENโS DAY COMMEMORATION: By Honourable Agnes Tjongarero
Statement By The Chairperson Of The AUSC Region 5 Council Of Ministers, Honourable Agnes Tjongarero,On The Occasion Of The International Womenโs Day Commemoration
The African Union Sports Council Region 5 joins the global community in commemorating International
Womenโs Day under the theme โAccelerate Action.โ This theme underscores the imperative of advancing
gender equality, reminding us to intensify and double our collective efforts towards attainment of the target
of full gender parity by 2028.
Sport serves as a potent catalyst for empowerment, unity, and social transformation. Within our Region,
we have observed the transformative power of sport in the lives of young girls and women, providing
opportunities for personal development, leadership, and exceptional achievement. Through sport, we
continue to dismantle barriers, challenge societal norms, and cultivate a more inclusive and equitable
environment.
While decimal progress has been made, challenges, barriers and limitations still persist in the realm of women and girlsโ empowerment through sport.
Unequal access to resources, limited leadership opportunities, and persistent gender-based discrimination including non-accidental gender based aggression continue to hinder progress. These barriers directly contradict the principles of fairness, diversity, and inclusion that we all desire and strive to uphold. Therefore, it is our collective responsibility to ensure that sport serves as a catalyst for gender equality and women empowerment.
In accordance with the โAccelerate Actionโ theme, Region 5 and all its members reaffirms its unwavering
commitment to the following actions:
1. Enhancing policies and frameworks that promote gender equality and promote equity in sport at all levels through Grassroots Sports Programmes, Talent identification Programs, Women Leadership Program and Sports for More.
2. Increasing investment in women sports programs to provide equitable opportunities for female athletes,
coaches, and administrators.
3.Advocating for inclusion of women in leadership positions within the sporting sector.
4.Combating gender-based violence and discrimination in sports environments through robust policies and awareness campaigns.
5. Celebrating and amplifying women achievements in sport to inspire future generations.
Gender equality is not merely a womenโs concern; it is a societal imperative. When women and girls thrive,
our communities, economies, and nations flourish. Therefore, we share a clarion call for society and in
particular the sports sector to remain resolute in our commitment to establishing a sporting environment
that is secure, inclusive, and empowering for all.
To the extraordinary women who continue to defy the odds and pave the way for others, your resilience and
determination inspires us all. To our male allies who stand in solidarity in the struggle for gender equality,
your unwavering support is indispensable in shaping a more equitable future. Together, we must champion
a world where every woman and girl has the opportunity to attain her full potential, both on and off the field.
Our commitment to gender equality must transcend mere words; it must manifest in our actions, policies,
and priorities. The time for change is now. Together, we can construct a more just and inclusive sporting
environment for future generations, especially in Region 5, the leading home of innovation and excellence!
Happy 2025 International Womenโs Day!
