The fierce personal devotion Julius Caesar commanded from his legions stood in stark contrast to the mercenary dynamic of the later Roman Empire, when emperors increasingly relied on financial rewards to keep their armies loyal and prevent mutiny or civil war.

During the Crisis of the Third Century and under emperors such as Septimius Severus and Caracalla, the military gained enormous political influence. Emperors dramatically increased soldiers’ pay and offered lavish cash bonuses, known as donatives, to secure their loyalty. Yet these payments were often never enough. Soldiers could turn against emperors who refused to offer more money or attempted to enforce strict discipline, with several emperors ultimately assassinated by their own troops.

Caesar’s relationship with his soldiers was fundamentally different. During the Gallic Wars, he built an extraordinary bond with his legions through years of shared hardship and campaigning. His soldiers saw him not simply as their commander, but as a charismatic leader who fought alongside them and consistently protected their interests.

When Caesar crossed the Rubicon in 49 BC, however, he faced a serious financial problem. He was heavily in debt and did not have enough funds to immediately pay his veterans the back pay they were owed. Yet his soldiers remained committed to him. His officers and legionaries reportedly offered to continue serving without immediate payment, while some even pooled their own money to help finance his campaign.

The contrast is striking: later Roman emperors often had to buy their soldiers’ loyalty with increasingly large payments, while Caesar’s legions trusted their commander so deeply that they were willing to fight his civil war before receiving what they were owed.
