The death toll from the New Year’s Eve inferno at the Le Constellation bar in Crans-Montana, Switzerland, has risen to at least 47 people, with many victims still awaiting identification due to the severity of their injuries. Witnesses and investigators believe the blaze was sparked at approximately 1:30 a.m. when a waitress, carried on a colleague's shoulders during a champagne service, held a sparkler that ignited flammable soundproofing foam and wood panels on the ceiling. The fire spread with catastrophic speed, leading to a "flashover" that caused the entire enclosed basement bar to ignite almost instantly.
The tragedy was compounded by a narrow, single staircase that served as the only exit for the more than 100 revellers—mostly teenagers and young adults—trapped inside. More than 115 survivors are currently being treated at specialist burns units across Switzerland, France, and Italy, many in critical condition. Swiss President Guy Parmelin described the event as one of the nation's worst tragedies, while King Charles III issued a statement expressing his heartbreak over the loss of young lives. Local authorities are now investigating whether safety regulations were breached, as sparklers were reportedly banned in similar venues due to extreme fire risks.
