The Scapegoat and the Final Reckoning
When Moses wrote about the Day of Atonement, he was not giving us a complicated picture to puzzle over. He was pointing us to the way God deals with sin for real, and how we can rest in what He is doing for us.
On the Day of Atonement, two goats stood before Israel. One was for the Lord and its sacrifice spoke of cleansing and forgiveness. The other was sent away into the wilderness with the sins of the people placed upon it. That goat was not a sacrifice for sin. It was a picture of sin being removed. The people watched the priest confess the sins of Israel over its head. Then they watched it go out into a land no one lived in. It was not coming back. Sin was sent away because God was making a point. He was showing them that there would come a time when sin would be dealt with in a final way.
There is an accuser in this world. Scripture calls him the accuser of the brethren. He works with guilt the way a craftsman works with his tools. He takes what is true and twists it. He takes what is forgiven and brings it up again. He takes what is sincere and calls it something else. Many people live under this cloud, never feeling good enough, never feeling clean, never feeling free.
But the message of the scapegoat invites us to remember that the guilt placed on it was no longer on the people. They had confessed it. They had placed their trust in the priest who acted for them. And they watched their sins being taken away. That is God’s message to us today. Our hope is not in how well we carry the burden. Our hope is in the One who carries it for us. Christ is our High Priest. He takes our sin. He takes our guilt. He takes the whole record and handles it in a way we never could.
The scapegoat pointed forward to the final judgment when Satan will bear the responsibility for the ruin he has caused. Scripture says that when Christ returns His reward is with Him. That tells us that the judgment takes place before He comes. God is not deciding if He wants to save us. He is revealing the truth about our choice to trust Him or not. He is showing the universe that His grace really does transform hearts. And then He will remove sin once and for all. The final blame will be placed where it belongs.
There are many today who feel crushed under their own failures. They wonder if God still wants them. They wonder if their case is hopeless. But the message of the Day of Atonement is a message of hope. You can bring your sin to Jesus. You can stand before Him just as you are. You can admit your need. And He will cleanse you. He will take the burden. He will place the responsibility for sin where it belongs. Your place is to trust Him. His work is to save you.
The scapegoat story tells us that guilt is not the final word. God is. Satan will not carry on forever. There will be an end to every false charge and every dark whisper. Christ stands in our favor. He lifts our burden and calls us clean. One day every trace of sin will be gone. And God will say to the believer who trusted Him, You are mine. Come and rest.
That is the hope of every weary soul.

Ambassadors for Christ, June 4
Reading Time: 2 minutes
Now then we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God did beseech you by us: we pray you in Christ’s stead, be ye reconciled to God. 2 Corinthians 5:20.
We are ambassadors for Christ, and we are to live, not to save our reputation, but to save perishing souls from perdition. Our daily endeavor should be to show them that they may gain truth and righteousness. Instead of trying to elicit sympathy for ourselves, by giving others the impression that we are not appreciated, we are to forget self entirely; and if we fail to do this, through want of spiritual discernment and vital piety, God will require at our hands the souls of those for whom we should have labored. He has made provision that every worker in His service may have grace and wisdom, that he may become a living epistle, known and read of all men.
By watchfulness and prayer we may accomplish just what the Lord designs that we shall. By faithful, painstaking discharge of our duty, by watching for souls as they that must give account, we may remove every stumbling block out of the way of others. By earnest warnings and entreaties, with our own souls drawn out in tender solicitude for those that are ready to perish, we may win souls to Christ.
I would that all my brethren and sisters would remember that it is a serious thing to grieve the Holy Spirit, and it is grieved when the human agent seeks to work himself, and refuses to enter the service of the Lord because the cross is too heavy or the self-denial too great. The Holy Spirit seeks to abide in each soul. If it is welcomed as an honored guest, those who receive it will be made complete in Christ. The good work begun will be finished; the holy thoughts, heavenly affections, and Christlike actions will take the place of impure thoughts, perverse sentiments, and rebellious acts.
The Holy Spirit is a divine teacher. If we heed its lessons, we shall become wise unto salvation. But we need to guard well our hearts, for too often we forget the heavenly instruction we have received, and seek to act out the natural inclinations of our unconsecrated minds. Each one must fight his own battle against self. Heed the teachings of the Holy Spirit. If this is done, they will be repeated again and again until the impressions are as it were “lead in the rock forever.”—Counsels on Health, 560, 561.
PRAYER REQUEST: MY FRIEND AND SIS @MoMaGroin is having surgery tomorrow morning at 7:30 Pacific time. She will be having nerves removed from the knee cap where she had her leg amputated. She has been suffering with much pain for the last year with horrible zaps, when it hit her knee, from the electric currents running through her leg. Thank you in advance for the prayers. God is so good!
