Some Facts About Yorùbá People and Historiography:
1. About a thousand years after the proto-Yoruboid first began to radiate out from their small villages and hamlets in the southwestern corner of the Niger-Benue Confluence, their Yorùbá descendants had created the largest community of practice south of the River Niger.
2. About this time, they were building cities and kingdoms; mastering material science in glass, iron, and copper-alloy production; and creating some of the most exquisite visual and verbal arts in different media and genres.
3. Ilé-Ifè was the arrowhead of this thrust of innovation that marked the Yorùbá Classical age.
4. The locally produced Ifè glass beads circulated widely across the West African region and possibly beyond, from Igbo-Ukwu, east of the Niger, to the Sudanic belt north of the Inland Niger Delta.
5. And the Classical Ifè sculptors succeeded in casting naturalistic human figures of nearly pure copper (96.8–99.7 percent), “a feat that artists of ancient Greece and Rome, the Italian Renaissance, and Chinese bronze casters never achieved.”
6. Not only that, but the intellectuals of the “city of daybreak” also formulated a coherent corpus of religious and philosophical traditions that have been the hallmarks of Yorùbá civilization.
The highly celebrated modalities of Yorùbá urbanism may date back to the ninth century, but the emergent qualities of cosmopolitanism, diversity, intensity, interdependency, and openness that have since characterized Yorùbá towns and cities are most noticeable from the twelfth century onward.
