Congratulations to Americans & to the United States of America on this anniversary of the 1776 Declaration of Independence.
My revolutionary ancestors Dr Ephraim Bowen (Providence, RI) & John Moore (Charleston, SC) would be very proud Americans have since accomplished so much. 🇺🇸
This 1795 dated threepence of George III is the 1st gold Maundy coin ever minted. Gold Maundy money was only struck in four other years: 1831, 1838, 1953 & 2002. This specimen from the Hunterian collection is the only example of its kind in existence.
Charles III will distribute Maundy money today, a tradition that dates back to 1213. King James IV of Scotland personally distributed this silver coin as part of a Royal Maundy ceremony in 1512. It’s the oldest identifiable Maundy money in existence
These silver coins were personally distributed by Queen Elizabeth II at the Royal Maundy ceremony on 10 April 1952. It was the first of over 21,000 public engagements that she carried out during her 70 year long reign.
At @DurhamCathedral, The King and Queen attended the annual Maundy Service, during which His Majesty presented 76 men and 76 women with purses containing Maundy Money.

My soul is sorrowful even unto death;
stay you here, and watch with me.
Now ye shall see a multitude, that will surround me.
Ye shall run away, and I will go to be sacrificed for you.
Behold the hour is at hand, and the Son of Man shall be betrayed
into the hands of sinners.
'I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.’
John 13: 34 - 35

We were thrilled to host this year’s Royal Maundy Service, where 152 people received Maundy Money to thank them for their outstanding Christian service
The King and Queen attended the service, listened to choral music, and heard readings before honouring the 152 recipients.
The Chrism Eucharist in the Cathedral is always a joy. To see the Nave awash with clergy and following, the procession of white robes out to the South Lawn. A delicious Maundy Thursday lunch followed, made and served by Pilgrims' Kitchen. Thank you to all who joined us.
The Listed Places of Worship Grants Scheme is a lifeline for churches. But changes by the Government mean its future is uncertain. Please help us save this important scheme, so we don't see even more churches fall into disrepair and close ⬇️
