As we mark the International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation, we’re spotlighting why accurate and ethical measurement matters.

FGM has long been under-researched, especially in understanding what truly works to end the practice. A critical first step is strengthening how we measure attitudes, norms, and behaviors through household surveys. In our latest blog, we unpack what we’re learning from impact evaluations on the validity of self-versus proxy reports, social desirability bias, and how innovative measurement can open new pathways to reducing FGM.

This new working paper argues that female economics PhD students benefit tremendously from having female economics faculty around.

How do they back up this claim?

They look at the timing of sabbatical leaves.

When female professors go on leave, it decreases third-year female Ph.D. students’ likelihood of publishing papers and securing academic positions.

Male Ph.D. students in the same cohort benefit from this absence, seeing an increase in their publishing and placement prospects.

Their estimates imply that "Adding one senior female professor to each top-50 department would close one-third of the assistant professor gender gap at top-25 schools."

This week we celebrate the 1st anniversary of the Bogotá Conference to End Violence Against Children.

The challenge remains urgent: over 1 billion children experience violence each year. This is not just a statistic; it’s a collective failure to protect the most vulnerable.

Now more than ever, evidence matters. We must use what works — proven strategies and data-driven solutions — to guide testing, adaptation, and scaling. Every child deserves safety, dignity, and the chance to reach their full potential.

Let’s turn commitments into action. Together, we can end violence against children.

How can we strengthen programming to address both collective and interpersonal violence in fragile settings?

This question was at the heart of the opening keynote by @amberpeterman, Evaluation Specialist, UNICEF at the #FragileLives conference last month in Berlin, hosted by the International Security and Development Center (ISDC) @ISDCBerlin .

Representing UNICEF Evaluation, Amber shared insights into the dual burden of violence faced by children and families across the globe, and how integrated approaches across sectors can create synergies to reduce harm.

UNICEF was also represented by @UNICEFEgypt 's Natalia Winder Rossi who joined a policy panel on empowering women and girls, highlighting the importance of generating evidence with and for girls to inform transformative policy.
