Some people like so-called secularist Taslima Nasreen are fearing a language radio external service that aims to promote Bangladeshi culture and Bangladesh itself.
Bangladesh Betar currently offers services in Hindi, Nepali, Arabic, and English. Before 2019, it also had an Urdu service, which was suddenly discontinued. There is now a proposal to reintroduce the Urdu service, which was formally submitted by A. Salam, representing various artists, to the Director General of Bangladesh Betar.
In the past, Bangladesh Betar also provided services in Punjabi and Pashto. The state-run radio service is now discussing bringing back its Urdu broadcast following the proposal, which had been stopped in 2019. It is not new, and Bangladesh Betar had an Urdu service for so many years until 2019.
These services fall under Bangladesh Betar's Foreign/External broadcasts and are aimed at an international audience. The purpose of these services is to enhance Bangladesh's global image, promote the government's development initiatives, and highlight the nation's history, heritage, and culture.
According to Bangladesh Betar's website, its external services department currently broadcasts five hours of daily programming in Bengali, English, Arabic, Hindi, and Nepali. These broadcasts are accessible via shortwave (4750 kHz, 63.16 metres), a mobile app, and the Betar website.
