The first time I traveled abroad was in 2022. I traveled to Germany as a 200-level student. Let’s talk…

One day, I was in my hostel when my lecturer, Dr. Saibu — God bless him so much — reached out to me and said he had sent something to my email for myself and a few other students to apply for.

It was a historical conference in Germany.

I checked it out and started the application process, but I struggled with it at some point. I took it back to him and he helped me complete it.

Thankfully, I got in on my first application.

At that point, they needed to process my visa and all the necessary travel documents. I was excited…until reality hit me.

How do you apply for a visa when you don’t even have an international passport?

Mind you, the only means of identification I had at the time was my school ID card.

So now, the opportunity I had prayed and hoped for had finally come, but I was not prepared for it.

Without an international passport, there was no way I could travel.

Fortunately for me, my dad was very proactive. He reached out to a couple of people and I traveled from Lagos to Abuja to process my passport.

Thankfully, it came out in about one or two weeks.

I took it to the embassy, my visa interview was successful, and that was how I traveled out of Nigeria for the first time.

I’m sharing this story because sometimes, the opportunities we pray for will come and meet us unprepared.

Many people say:
“I want to travel abroad.”
“I want to study overseas.”
“I want global opportunities.”

But you don’t even have an international passport.

So when the opportunity finally comes, what happens next?

An international passport is not just for traveling.

It is a valid means of identification.
You can use it for verification processes, applications, LinkedIn verification, international opportunities, and movement across countries.

That’s why I always say: prepare before the opportunity arrives.

Interestingly, I recently came across an update I was excited to share.

GoLoko Diaries is currently partnering with the Nigeria Immigration Service to help people process their international passports at discounted rates.

•International passport (5 years) — ₦150,000 instead of ₦200,000
•International passport (10 years) — ₦250,000 instead of ₦300,000

When I did mine years ago, it was about ₦70k–₦80k, but we all know how much prices have changed.

And realistically, in the next few years, it may become even more expensive.

So if getting your passport is something you’ve been postponing, this may honestly be the best time to do it.

I was 16 years old when this photo was taken. This was the first time I would “go out” with a male. It was a secondary school class mate

My mum was aware

Not only was she aware but we picked out my dress and did my hair together

I told her that a boy wanted to take me out and she said “sure, go and sit and gist”

This is how I was raised

And I personally believe that this was the main reason why I grew up chaste and did not make dumb mistakes as a growing young woman

Because my mum was my friend. She knew when to be a mother and when to be a big sis. When to be my bestie

Every man that spoke to me , my mum knew

I did not have have hide

I did not have to pretend

She told me I would like boys and that it was totally fine. But that it was like a plant I could nurse till it grows into something sinful, or I could quash it

She told me about sex

She told me outside marriage it wasn’t worth it and would just leave heartbroken and waste my time

She told me EVERYTHING.

You could not tell me anything new.

We gisted about boys.

She shared her own experiences growing up with me

She trusted me enough to send me out to meet a boy and not do anything foolish and come back home.

We grew up conservative but my mum made sure I made decisions by myself and understood the “why” behind the rules.

She taught me about consequence

She taught me about how that Gods way is always best

You could not deceive me

You could not lie to me and tell me rubbish

Mumsy was always ten steps ahead

The woman that I am today, I owe to my mother.

I hope more mothers, especially Christian mothers understand how to tow this delicate line
