The hurdy-gurdy is one of Europe's oldest mechanical string instruments still played today.

It started out as the 'organistrum' back in the 10th century, and it was so massive it took two people to play, one to turn the wheel and one to work the keys.

They mostly used it in medieval churches.

Over time, it shrank down into a portable, one-person instrument called the symphonia, which eventually became the hurdy-gurdy we know today.
