All racism is a negative experience, but not every negative experience is racism. If DEI training doesn’t help us differentiate between the two, in the real world it falls short of where it can help most. This also applies to sexism, ableism, classism, among many other -isms.
We should have this conversation.
-isms are real. They impact health outcomes, lead to wasted resources and have enormous human costs. But -isms, when happening at low frequencies and low acuity, aren’t always the most important relative priority.
I don’t think we will ever live in a world where @Royal_College will design training that does not lead to competent, knowledgeable, and skilled health professionals that improve and save lives. Integrating DEI into training where we help our future physicians develop skills that humanize the patients they serve is a universally good thing. Agree that we should always reflect on whether what we’re doing is achieving that.
Link to the National Post article suggesting anti-racist doctors would put social justice above medical expertise. Once again, I don’t think that will ever happen.

@DrJacobsRad@Royal_College@fordnation We can see you don’t like how it’s phrased in the document, and you would like Med Expert to remain as the integral role. That’s a valid opinion!
So rather than be inflammatory and divisive, make a suggestion about how the EDI proposal should be one of other roles instead.
@DrJacobsRad@Royal_College@fordnation This isn’t about choosing EDI over medical expertise and you know it. It’s a focus on supporting and respecting the entirety of human being who is our patient. Medical expert is a given and the Cdn MedEd system does a good job of reinforcing that.

#ICRE2019@Royal_College
I can’t remember a meeting that so consistently made me sit up, take notice, and shake my head in amazement at the power of the speakers. Quinn Capers’ ends #ICRE2019 with a standing ovation for his amazing talk: diversity in medicine saves lives.
“If we are serious about ending health disparities, we need to make the ability to enhance diversity and cultural competency a top priority when ranking candidates for graduate medical education”
Inspirational closing plenary #ICRE2019 by Dr Quinn Capers IV @DrQuinnCapers4
What are the culprits for lack of diversity in medicine? Getting past the life barriers after highschool and lack of #rolemodels
Its about promoting education and opportunities in those communities, and having role models
