🏳️⚧️ Akari is a young Pokémon trainer who lived as a boy for 13 years, but on his first day in middle school has to deal with the fact that he was assigned female at birth — in Pokémon's most clear depiction of gender dysphoria.
And I don't think his story could be told today.
Update: Her name was Persia Amarra Conway, and she was 33 years old. This image was shared by her mother on Facebook. Her mother, Michelle P. Simmons, also posted the following:
"Most people may not know this, but I am the proud mother of a beautiful transgender daughter, Persia Amarra Conway.
A few days ago, my world changed forever. A monster in Houston, Texas, took my baby’s life.
Persia was not just my daughter. She was a light. She was a force. She was the kind of person who could walk into a room and leave it brighter than she found it. To know her was to love her.
She was kind-hearted, funny, ambitious, intelligent, fearless, and absolutely beautiful. No beautiful isn’t a strong enough word. Persia was breathtaking. She was strong-willed like her mama, determined to live life on her own terms, and she carried a spirit that could never be confined by anyone else’s expectations.
She was someone’s sister. Someone’s best friend. Someone’s safe place. She was deeply loved by her family, her community, and everyone fortunate enough to experience her presence.
As a mother, I keep asking myself questions that have no answers. How do I go on without hearing her voice? How do I accept a world that continues to turn when my own has stopped? How do I live with the unbearable reality that I could not protect my child?
Because no matter how old she became, Persia would always be my baby.
In my quiet moments, I can almost hear her telling me, “Mom, don’t cry. I love you. I’m still with you.”
And while my heart is shattered into pieces, I hold on to those words. I hold on to her smile. I hold on to every memory, every laugh, every hug, and every “I love you.”
Persia Amarra Conway was loved. Persia Amarra Conway mattered. Persia Amarra Conway deserved to grow old, to chase her dreams, and to live the beautiful life she envisioned for herself.
To the transgender community, to our family, to friends, and to complete strangers who have reached out with prayers, love, support, and compassion, thank you. Your messages, calls, and kind words are carrying us through some of the darkest moments of our lives.
My sweet girl, my little best friend, I promise I will speak your name. I will honor your life. I will carry your love with me until my last breath.
Until we meet again, my angel.
Forever your mother.
Forever loving you.
Forever missing you.

There is no doubt that Persia Conway was murdered.
She was found with no clothes on, in Brays Bayou that is close to Bissonnet.
They intended 100% to leave no evidence.
Spreading her picture, will help identify where and who she was with last before her disappearance.
The more eyes on this the better, as keeping it quiet will only enable the killer/s to get away with this.

It's frightening to be trans in the U.S., especially in red states. To that end, I'm excited to finally able to share what I've been working on for the past year: 110+ pages of trans refugee relocation resources, guides, and support networks within the shield states. 🔗👇
protect trans kids. bc trans adults were once trans kids & we don’t all survive to become one without the support & healthcare we all deserved. 🏳️⚧️
reminder that jkr is not like your aunt who doesn’t get they/them pronouns, she is a vicious anti trans activist who has literally rolled back trans rights in the UK and has extensively harmed myself and my community, and even indirectly killed some of us.

A little positivity for all of the beautiful trans girls on here:
When I was in my Women's Studies program in undergrad, I was the only trans woman in a program of roughly 70 highly opinionated, diverse feminists.
I went in absolutely terrified that they'd hate me.
I was very early in my transition on HRT, maybe 4 months.
I was full of imposter syndrome, trying so hard to prove that I belonged.
I decided to share everything with them.
I added them all on social media, and I showed them all of the highs, lows, HRT, surgery, all of it in real time.
And instead of rejection, I found recognition.
Those feminists were curious, supportive, and very protective.
By the end of my transition, they weren't just accepting me, they were rooting for me.
That experience changed my life because real feminists saw my womanhood clearly.
I then learned to see it as unquestionable, too.
That's why today, after 15 years of transition, and 11 years post-transition, I'm not fazed whatsoever when people call me a "man" or misgender me in an attempt to hurt me.
They're arguing with something that was settled long ago in community, in scholarship, and in lived sisterhood.
To other trans women:
Sometimes, womanhood isn't something you prove. Sometimes it's something you grow into, and never have to doubt again. 🩵🩷🩵🩷
*the next time someone demands that you define what is a woman for them, drop this on their dumb ass.
In 1890, the X and Y chromosomes were discovered. It was found that the men who were tested had 46 chromosomes, including an X and a Y, while women who were tested also had 46 chromosomes, including 2 X chromosomes.
So obviously the conclusion was that the Y chromosome defined masculinity. A reasonable conclusion.
Fast forward 50 years... and it was found that some men had 47 chromosomes, including 2 X's and a Y, while some women had 45, including only one X. Still no problem with the "Y chromosome defines masculinity" idea.
Then... it was found that fully 1 in 300 men weren't 46,XY. Some women were.
Oops.
After DNA was discovered in the 50s, it was found that the SrY gene, usually found on the Y chromosome, sometimes was missing. And sometimes had been translocated to another chromosome, hence 46,XX men and 46,XY women. So SrY defined masculinity.
Then.. it was found out that some men didn’t have an SrY chromosome, not anywhere. Some women did. Other genes were involved. Worse, other factors, such as Androgen Insensitivity made 46,XY people female, and Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia masculinised 46,XX people.
Then in the 70s, other syndromes, such as 5alpha-reductase-2 deficiency were identified, which caused babies to look like one sex at birth, then the other at puberty. Worse, in some places 1 in 50 infants had this natural sex change, it was not rare there.
Science 1974 Dec 27; 186 (4170): 1213-5
In an isolated village of the southwestern Dominican Republic, 2% of the live births were in the 1970's, guevedoces....These children appeared to be girls at birth, but at puberty these 'girls' sprout muscles, testes, and a penis. For the rest of their lives they are men in nearly all respects.
In the 90s, it was found that hormonal hiccups in the womb caused some parts of the body to develop as one sex, othersbas the other, regardless of genetics.
Male–to–female transsexuals have female neuron numbers in a limbic nucleus. Kruiver et al J Clin Endocrinol Metab (2000) 85:2034–2041
The present findings of somatostatin neuronal sex differences in the BSTc and its sex reversal in the transsexual brain clearly support the paradigm that in transsexuals sexual differentiation of the brain and genitals may go into opposite directions
It's a matter of timing during foetal development. Sometimes a boy is born looking like a girl, sometimes a girl is born looking like a boy, regardless of chromosomes.
This is complex stuff. We don't teach the Theory of General Relativity in grade school, Newtonian physics or at most Special Relativity (far simpler) is enough. Similary, "XX is female, XY is male" is good enough unless you do medicine or biology in college.
It's only really relevant when talking about Trans or Intersex people, just as Relativistic effects only become relevant in the domain of the very big, very small, or very very fast, close to 186,000 miles a second.
People do *not* need psychiatric help when they think that things get heavier, more massive, as they go faster... while lengths contract. People do *not* need help when they think their sex is something different from their genetics.
Intersex people exist. Trans people exist. They are unusual, so trying to apply the usual approximations is as silly as trying to apply Newtonian physics to things moving close to or at light speed. Legislating such things is as insane as legally ruling that Pi=3... as has been done in the past.
I hope this helps explain.
