A few years ago, Elrazi Medical University, one of Sudan’s leading medical universities, relocated its operations to a new permanent campus in Kano following the ongoing conflict in Sudan. As part of supporting this transition, the Kano State Government is considering a request by Sudan to designate Muhammadu Abdullahi Wase Teaching Hospital (Asibitin Nasarawa) as its teaching hospital.

This development reflects the deep historical, cultural, and educational ties between Kano, the wider Hausaland, and Sudan. The Hausa are among Sudan’s largest ethnic communities, with an estimated population of around two million, and have long been integrated into Sudanese society, including service in the country’s military and other security institutions.

Sudan’s first Prime Minister, Ismail al-Azhari (1954–1956), is also widely reported to have been of Hausa ancestry, underscoring the longstanding connections between the two regions.

The relocation of Elrazi Medical University therefore represents more than a response to the current crisis, it builds on centuries of shared history, people-to-people relationships, and cooperation.
