Government forces have abducted Dr. Wondossen Assefa from Gonder on April 13, 2023. Dr. Wondossen's family are extremely worried as his whereabouts are unknown. The Ethiopian Government taskforce that hunts down Amharas has continued to abduct Amharas that in any way or form tried to expose the ongoing genocide against Amharas in Ethiopia. This taskforce has a squad that operates above the law, the Oromo Regional Forces and Administration and The Amhara Prosperity Party have all been cooperating with the taskforce to accomplish their mission of targeting Amhara human right defenders, professionals, politicians, charity workers, journalists, media personalities, activists, influencers or anyone that dared to speak up about the treatment of Amharas in Ethiopia.

Dr. Wondossen is now being detained for the second time; he was also detained during the first wave of Amhara mass arrests that started end of May 2022. Dr. Wondossen like many Amharas who responded to the call to defend their people and country when TPLF invaded Amhara and Afar regions has volunteered to organize people so they can defend themselves. After the war was concluded, the government detained him and 13 other Fano organizers for helping people defend themselves under the auspices of the official call-to-arms.

Dr. Wondossen has long been active in exposing the systemic nature of Amhara Genocide in which along with colleagues uncovered that over 50 officially used documents in Ethiopia currently are used to demonize Amharas readying them for targeting. These documents are found in various forms, starting from curriculum to ordinary government circulars to policy documentations and regional anthems. Social media influencers who are on government payroll have been rallying for his detention using disinformation and various forms of defamation.

GPE demands his immediate release and call on all human rights organizations and mandated UN rapporteurs to demand the release of Dr. Wondossen and all other Amharas that are held in various detention centers and undisclosed places only because of their identity. Over 10,000 Amharas have been detained since the government have started this latest round of targeting Amharas.
