Democrats objected to extending the same 702 authorities that exist today, and the same ones they agreed to extend 40-plus days ago, for another three weeks.
This, of course, comes after they voted against the bipartisan, long-term deal they helped draft.
Makes sense, right?
“Thune started his tenure as Majority Leader by confirming Trump’s cabinet at a historic pace — work that has continued despite Senate Democrats attempting to block every one of Trump’s civilian nominees.” https://t.co/EWAXSCNJSa
500 days ago, Republicans had a long to-do list.
We’ve checked a lot of things off, but we still have more to do.
And we’re not about to take our foot off the gas.
Senate Republicans have now confirmed nearly every single civilian nominee who’s eligible for floor consideration, far outpacing previous administrations.
After @SenateGOP confirmed the president’s Cabinet at the fastest pace in more than 20 years, they reformed the noms process to overcome historic Democrat obstruction (Trump is only POTUS to be denied voice vote or UC confirmation), which has all but eliminated the noms backlog.
The difference here is that Thune wants to fund ALL of DHS, but Dems have recommitted themselves to a failed defund the police agenda. Sen. Schumer went as far as saying that "nobody respects" the officers who should have been funded months ago (when Dems' shuttered the agency).
One party stood up for law enforcement and safe and secure borders.
The other party stood up for open borders and defunding the police, after saying "nobody respects" the law enforcement officers who ended the Democrats' border crisis.
The distinction couldn't be clearer.
.@LeaderJohnThune: "we’ve heard Democrats’ typical refrain that this bill was just tax cuts for billionaires. That’s laughable, it really is. The largest proportional benefits from this bill went to Americans earning less than $50,000 a year.
"The increased standard deduction from this bill is something that was claimed by more than 100 million Americans this year to reduce and simplify their taxes.
"More than 34 million families claimed the child tax credit this year, which the Working Families Tax Cuts permanently increased and linked to the cost of living.
"And nearly half of filers claimed one of the new tax cuts – no tax on tips and overtime, auto loan interest, or the senior deduction."
Republicans' Working Families @TaxCuts prevented a $4 trillion-plus tax increase and delivered permanent tax relief to American families and workers.

Let’s summarize where we are after a 40+ day Democrat shutdown of the Department of Homeland Security.
1) ICE and CBP are funded, thanks to the Working Families Tax Cuts and the foresight of President Trump and Republicans in Congress.
2) After holding DHS and the American people hostage for over 40 days, Dems got ZERO restrictions that would prevent ICE and CBP agents from doing their jobs safely.
3) Due to Dem obstruction of the appropriations process, ICE and CBP will get even more funding through budget reconciliation.
4) Dems have once again established themselves as the “Open Borders, Defund the Police” party heading into an election.
5) Dem leadership has proven once again they can’t be trusted to make a deal.
Which begs the question if you’re a Dem senator or one of their left-wing supporters: What was this really all about?
Also, kind of odd to brag that you’ve defunded law enforcement when Republicans have already pre-funded those divisions.
That said, not sure how many versions of “defund the police” Dems need to go through to understand it’s not a winning message.
.@LeaderJohnThune: "Enough is enough. Republicans have bent over backward to negotiate with Democrats. Now Democrats need to get serious about funding the department of Homeland Security."
Incredibly important thread showing how virtually every @SenateDems is on the complete opposite side of how most of them are expected to vote later today on @SenJonHusted's amendment
After years of Democrats calling voter ID an instrument of voter suppression, Senate Democrats now say they are on board with commonsense voter ID requirements
If Democrats vote they way talk, there will be enough votes to make voter ID the Law of the Land ⬇️
It's the moment of truth for @SenateDems. Do they support voter ID or not?
Today every senator will be forced to go on the record on @SenJonHusted's clean voter ID amendment. 🧵
Yesterday morning Republicans sent a simple three-page amendment to the Democrats that removed ERO language from the bipartisan DHS bill and added language to ensure employees receive backpay. All of the original reforms are still included in the bill. All of the other original bipartisan language is still in the bill.
This provides a clear path to end the Democrats’ shutdown, reopen DHS, make employees whole again, and continue to focus on the areas of disagreement, all of which Democrats say they want.
This is pretty simple. All they have to do is say yes.
On the unresolved ERO issue (again, the area of disagreement Dems say they want to continue discussing) those talks can proceed, even though Democrats have yet to get serious. Republicans predicted that Democrats would attempt to defund law enforcement, which is why they prefunded ICE in last year's Working Families Tax Cuts.
We’re on day seven of the Senate’s SAVE America Act debate.
Seven days of Senate Democrats twisting themselves in knots, trying to explain why they oppose commonsense measures that a vast majority of Americans strongly support.
