In this opinion article, I reflect on the importance of political society in state-building, particularly for those engaged in governance, political institutionalization, and post-conflict reconstruction.

While civil society remains essential for accountability and social cohesion, sustainable state-building also requires a more institutionalized political society grounded in constitutional governance, responsible political competition, and leadership capable of managing political differences through dialogue, negotiation, and consensus-building.

Somalia’s future stability will depend not only on active citizens and resilient communities, but also on the emergence of a political society strong enough to govern the state it seeks to rebuild.
