Ethiopia’s request to address the Security Council under Rule 37 during discussions on the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM) is a clear indication of its persistent obsession with Somalia — her land, her security, and her seas.

Rule 37 permits only affected countries to participate in such deliberations, yet Somalia has already declared that it does not require Ethiopia’s involvement in its security matters.

On December 23, 2024, Somalia strongly condemned Ethiopian forces for a “deliberate and unprovoked attack” on Somali National Army positions in Doolow, which resulted in casualties among Somali personnel and civilians.

Reports suggest that Somalia has secured 7,000 troops from Uganda, with 5,000 more divided between Djibouti and Rwanda, while Egypt was considered a backup option for the AUSSOM mission.

Allegedly, an FGS delegation in Addis Ababa during the Doolow incident offered Ethiopia a contribution of 2,000 troops under strict conditions—they must not be stationed in Gedo or Southwest regions, areas Ethiopia has dominated since the 1990s and used as gateways to influence the FGS. Somalia also insisted that it would determine the deployment of these troops and that Ethiopia or others would cover the costs.

President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud must recognize Ethiopia’s longstanding ambition to dominate, destabilize, and exploit Somalia. His lack of firm resolve risks enabling Ethiopia’s overreach.

It is imperative that he takes a clear and uncompromising stance to protect Somalia’s sovereignty and prevent Ethiopia from undermining its security.

Allowing even a single Ethiopian troop into Somalia under these circumstances poses a grave risk to the nation.

Tomorrow, I will be sending a report to the EU, all European embassies, and the US embassy about individuals who obtained visas through the Somali government and are now seeking asylum in Europe, America, and Canada. The Somali government significantly facilitated their visa acquisition, and many of these individuals, including civil servants, MPs, Ministers, and general public related to high-ranking officials, did not return to #Somalia.
