Venus Is Alive After All
Unlike Earth, Venus’s surface is not broken into tectonic plates; instead, it features a continuous, unbroken crust. No plates mean no movement and no tectonics. Conditions were hardly promising, either: the atmosphere is 93 times denser than Earth’s (with pressure comparable to a depth of 900 meters underwater), and surface temperatures reach 467°C—hot enough to melt lead.
A new study by a team from ETH Zurich appears to change this picture. Venus is not merely geologically active; it hosts numerous active volcanoes. The key evidence lies in rift valleys—elongated lowlands formed when the crust pulls apart. An Earth-based equivalent is the East African Rift System, though on Venus, these structures stretch for thousands of kilometers.
For the first time, the team created a high-resolution 3D model of these rifts. Previous studies relied largely on 2D calculations based on simplified assumptions about material properties.
Simulations revealed that the rifts are widening significantly faster than previously thought—between 3 and 10 centimeters per year. Broad ridges, or rift flanks, rise along the edges of young rifts. These features contain a built-in "timer": once movement stops, the flanks rapidly subside, meaning the older the system, the lower and shallower the flanks become. While erosion smooths the terrain on Earth, crustal relaxation does so on Venus.
The model was cross-referenced with real-world data: broad, high flanks are indeed visible in images captured by the Magellan probe, which operated near the planet in the 1990s. Calculations suggest that some of these rifts may have formed around 100 million years ago—virtually yesterday in geological terms.
Funded by @KfW_FZ_int, the Joint Resilience Programme with @UNICEFSomalia & @WFPSomalia empowers women IDPs through VSLAs/alternative income, integrated with funding from @USAIDSavesLives.
Transforming lives with financial independence & resilience—every dollar counts! 💪🌍
It is no coincide that today – International Women's Day #IWD2024 – I met a woman at the Dollow IDP site in #Somalia who received training, seeds and equipment from @FAO. Now she is a successful farmer!
When we #InvestInWomen, we see REAL returns that benefit everyone!
FAO's work in Dollow, Somalia, is helping IDPs produce their own food, disproving the notion that they just sit in camps and wait for aid.
The joint resilience project aims to strengthen resilience for almost 25,000 families in Jubaland thanks to @KfW_FZ_int funding.

@MohamedAKhalif@UNICEFKenya Thanks to the County government for responding swiftly to contain the outbreak, however I request that more awareness campaigns on hygiene and sanitation to be done to educate the public on the how to prevent outbreak at household level.
