Today, I had the honour of representing His Excellency, the Executive Governor of Kano State, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, at the formal handover of office accommodation to the National Agency for the Great Green Wall (NAGGW) and the inauguration of the National Steering Committee for the Scaling Up Resilience for Africa’s Great Green Wall (SURAGGWA) Project.
During the event, I reaffirmed the commitment of the Kano State Government to environmental restoration, climate resilience, and sustainable development. Under the leadership of His Excellency, Kano State has restored over 50,000 hectares of degraded land, planted millions of trees, strengthened climate governance, and continued to implement initiatives that protect our environment while improving livelihoods across communities.
To conclude the day’s activities, I accompanied the Honourable Minister of Environment on an inspection tour of selected parks and urban landscape projects executed by the Kano State Government under the leadership of His Excellency. These parks, reclaimed and transformed from neglected spaces, are being developed as green breathing spaces and modern recreational centres for residents of the Kano metropolis.
Beyond enhancing the beauty of our city, they provide healthier public spaces for relaxation, recreation, and community engagement, reflecting our administration’s commitment to creating a cleaner, greener, and more beautiful Kano.

After more than four years of inactivity, the Guzu-Guzu Regional Water Scheme, a 7.2 million litres-per-day (MLD) water treatment plant serving Kabo and Rimin Gado Local Government Areas, has produced its first drop of water once again.
The rehabilitation works include the installation of a new 800 kVA generator set, repairs to four raw water pumps, and the rehabilitation of the powerhouse, staff offices, and security facilities to restore the scheme to full operational capacity.
As part of the testing and commissioning phase, communities within the scheme's catchment area will begin receiving water supply from tomorrow, 8 July 2026, as work continues towards the full restoration of the facility.
The administration of His Excellency, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, remains firmly committed to reviving all 19 Regional Water Schemes across Kano State to ensure sustainable access to safe and potable water for all our people.

Honourable Commissioner
Ministry of Water Resources, Environment and Climate Change
Kano State.
Following the inspection visit to the Joda Regional Water Scheme last week, I am pleased to report that rehabilitation works commenced immediately. This facility has not pumped a single liter of water in seven years, making this swift intervention both critical and historic.
Significant progress has already been made: four tube wells have been repaired and are currently active, successfully filling the facility's two storage tanks to their combined 720,000-liter capacity. One of the generators used to power the facility has been successfully fixed. Repairs on the second generator, along with the restoration of the main electricity supply, are expected to be completed by tomorrow.
Out of the four high-lift pumps at the facility, two have been fixed and are already working, while repairs on the remaining two are currently underway. With these operational, this plant, which boasts a 9.6 MLD (million liters per day) capacity, will begin pumping water to the communities along its distribution lines in the coming days.
This administration, under the leadership of the Executive Governor, Alhaji Abba K. Yusuf, remains deeply committed to restoring rural water supply. To ensure the Joda plant is restored to its full operational capacity, the Governor has ordered the construction of additional tube wells, as well as the complete rehabilitation of the administrative offices and other vital infrastructure.
Our collective efforts are yielding tangible results for the people.

Today, Kano State proudly hosted and declared open a 2-day Capacity Building Training on Renewable Energy Waste Management, in partnership with UNIDO, the European Union, and the Federal Ministry of Environment.
As we rapidly transition to clean energy, we must responsibly manage end-of-life equipment like solar panels and batteries. Under the visionary leadership of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, Kano is advancing major circular economy initiatives such as the upcoming Gabasawa Circular Economy Industrial Cluster and we stand ready to serve as a leading demonstration state for sustainable waste management across Nigeria.
Dr. Dahiru Muhammad Hashim
Honourable Commissioner,
Ministry of Water Resources, Environment and Climate Change.
Continuing our assessment tour of regional water treatment plants, we visited the Joda and Wudil WTPs, which have design capacities of 9.6 MLD and 20 MLD respectively, serving Gabasawa, Wudil, Warawa, Dawakin Kudu, Gezawa, and Gaya. Similar to other regional schemes, both facilities show significant levels of dilapidation. Out of the 11 tube wells at Joda and 19 at Wudil, only 4 are currently functional at each site, a deficit severely worsened by excessive local sandmining that has drastically decreased well efficiency.
In line with the strong commitment of His Excellency, Governor Abba K. Yusuf to provide clean water across Kano, mobilization for the comprehensive revitalization of these plants will commence as early as tomorrow. We are moving quickly to restore these schemes to optimal capacity and deliver the clean water our communities deserve.

In preparation for the launch of our 2026 Annual Tree Planting Campaign, I today joined His Highness, the Emir of Kano, Dr. Muhammad Sanusi II, who led by example by planting some of the initial seedlings at the Emir's Palace. His Highness performed this historic act representing all the traditional rulers and institutions across Kano State, anchoring our collective royal and civic commitment to addressing the growing challenges of climate change and environmental degradation.
I deeply commend His Highness for his invaluable support for environmental sustainability and for lending his powerful voice to this important cause. I also call on communities, institutions, private organisations, and development partners to join hands with us in ensuring the success of this ambitious programme.

Today, I visited the Thomas and Ghari Regional Water Schemes, and what I found was deeply troubling.
Facilities meant to serve three local government areas have remained non-functional for several years. We found almost all electrical wiring stripped from generators and pumps. A power project completed just three months ago in Thomas, which is yet to be commissioned, had already been looted. Furthermore, security personnel hired to protect the plant were found farming on its grounds.
I have ordered the immediate suspension of the scheme's Manager pending an investigation. Where criminal culpability is established, we will pursue full legal action.
His Excellency Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf is fully committed to restoring Kano's water infrastructure. We are currently rehabilitating Chalawa and Tamburawa, and we will ensure that all regional water schemes are fully revitalized.
While the government sustains its efforts to revive these water schemes, we call on the general public to do their part. Public assets belong to all of us, and we all must protect them.

Following the commencement of the rehabilitation of major water treatment plants supplying Kano metropolis, as launched by His Excellency, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, we today began an inspection tour of smaller water treatment plants serving rural communities alongside our colleagues, the Honourable Commissioners for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Power and Renewable Energy, and Rural and Community Development.
During the tour, we visited the Kusalla Water Treatment Plant, which supplies water to Karaye, Kiru and Gwarzo Local Government Areas; the Pada Water Treatment Plant serving Gwarzo; the Magaga Water Treatment Plant serving Gwarzo and Kabo; and the Guzu Water Treatment Plant, which supplies water to Kabo and Rimin Gado Local Government Areas.
We assessed the operational challenges confronting these facilities and have developed comprehensive rehabilitation plans for their restoration, subject to the approval of His Excellency the Governor.
I wish to assure the good people of Kano State, particularly residents of Karaye, Kiru, Gwarzo, Kabo and Rimin Gado Local Government Areas, that the administration of His Excellency, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, remains fully committed to restoring these water schemes to optimal functionality. By the grace of Allah, these facilities will be rehabilitated and reliable access to potable water will be ensured for the benefiting communities.

Following the launch of the 2026 Statewide Drainage Clearance Exercise last week, which includes the Madobi Underpass, Jakara-Kwarin Gogau, Baban Gwari, among others, we have begun distributing specialized desilting equipment to registered self-help groups across the state.
This ongoing rollout empowers local communities to handle minor drainage clearance in their neighborhoods, perfectly complementing the Ministry’s continuous work in cleaning major waterways.
We urge residents to reach out and collaborate with these designated groups to ensure smooth clearance operations. Taking these proactive steps together is essential for preventing urban flooding and protecting our homes.
The names and contact phone numbers of the registered self-help groups are attached below.

For years, the people of Bulbula and Gayawa have suffered the devastating impacts of erosion—lives have been lost, properties destroyed, and school children forced to navigate dangerous paths just to access basic education. While many believed that addressing this ecological nightmare was not feasible, we refused to accept impossibilities under the leadership of His Excellency, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf.
This critical project reflects the unwavering commitment of our Governor to delivering people-oriented, nature-based, and sustainable solutions that truly transform communities and strengthen resilience against the growing impacts of climate change.
Delighted to have officially launched our 2026 Statewide Drainage Clearance Exercise yesterday at the strategic Jakara–Kwarin Gogau drainage. Inspired by the visionary leadership of our amiable Governor, Alh. Abba K. Yusuf, this proactive intervention targets one of our most critical flood-control channels to provide lasting relief to historically vulnerable communities.
At the Ministry, we are working round the clock to ensure that our neighborhoods remain safe and resilient throughout the rainy season. While we clear major waterways to ensure a flood-free Kano—with plans already in place to deploy specialized desilting equipment to self-help groups next week—I urge all residents to take ownership of their environment by putting an end to improper waste dumping in our drainages. Together, we can build a cleaner, safer, and more climate-resilient state where every family has the opportunity to thrive.

As part of World Environment Day 2026, we joined our dedicated street sweepers on an awareness walk to recognize their contribution to a cleaner Kano.
I am pleased to announce that His Excellency, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, has approved their enrollment in KSCHIMA and free medical diagnosis at the hospital located within REMASAB.
We have also provided new uniforms and protective gear for the sweepers and installed additional metallic waste bins along major roads.
We urge residents to make proper use of these bins and support our collective effort to keep Kano clean, green, and sustainable.

Today, I had the distinct honor of representing His Excellency, Governor Abba K. Yusuf, at the critical Stakeholders’ Meeting on Flood Predictions and the Downscaling of Early Warning Messages, held at the Coronation Hall, Government House.
Driven by the visionary leadership of our amiable Governor, this engagement comes at a vital moment as we proactively translate national climate forecasts into actionable, grassroots early warnings to protect lives, livelihoods, and infrastructure across Kano State.
Building on our successful 2025 interventions that prevented major urban flooding, we are aggressively scaling up for 2026. To ensure a flood-free rainy season, we are launching a robust suite of measures including the 2026 Statewide Drainage Clearance, distribution of desilting equipment to self-help groups, removal of illegal structures blocking waterways, and the planting of 10 million seedlings to serve as natural flood barriers.

I am pleased to announce that His Excellency, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, has approved the merger of the Ministry of Water Resources and the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change into a single Ministry, now known as the Ministry of Water Resources, Environment and Climate Change. I am deeply honoured by the confidence reposed in me to lead this newly integrated Ministry and drive the realization of its mandate in service to the people of Kano State.
I am fully conscious that this is not an easy responsibility. Bringing together two vital sectors with distinct but interconnected mandates requires commitment, coordination, and hard work. However, my team and I are fully prepared for the task and remain committed to ensuring a seamless transition while strengthening service delivery across both sectors. We will continue to work diligently to improve environmental sustainability, climate resilience, and water resource management in line with the development vision of the administration of His Excellency, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf.

Today, I inspected the ongoing rehabilitation works at the Goron Dutse Reservoir, the main and most strategic water distribution facilities serving Kano Metropolis.
The reservoir consists of three major storage tanks with capacities of 7.3 million litres, 11.2 million litres, and 22.5 million litres, bringing its total capacity to 40.5 million litres. Sadly, the smaller tanks of 7.3 and 11.2 million litres built in 1930 were abandoned for over 30 years, and nearly all critical infrastructure at the reservoir has been vandalized.
I am pleased to note that rehabilitation efforts are progressing steadily. Pipe replacement works are ongoing on the 7.3 million and 11.2 million litre tanks, while desilting activities are currently underway on the 22.5 million litre tank.
This intervention, approved by His Excellency Abba Kabir Yusuf, is part of our broader efforts to restore water supply across Kano State, alongside ongoing works at the Tamburawa and Challawa Water Treatment Plants.

Today marks three years of purposeful, visionary, and people-centered leadership under the stewardship of His Excellency, the Executive Governor of Kano State, Engr. Abba Kabir Yusuf.
In just three years, His Excellency has not only fulfilled over 90% of the promises made to the good people of Kano during the campaign but has also exceeded expectations by laying a solid foundation for sustainable growth and development across every sector of our state. From education, healthcare, agriculture, infrastructure, water resources, youth empowerment, women development, environment, transportation, commerce, and social welfare, the administration has consistently demonstrated its commitment to delivering tangible dividends of democracy.
Through strategic investments in human capital development, the revitalization of critical public infrastructure, the restoration of public confidence in governance, and the implementation of policies that directly improve the lives of ordinary citizens, Kano State has witnessed remarkable progress. Thousands of young people have been empowered through skills acquisition and employment initiatives, schools and healthcare facilities have been renovated and equipped, roads have been constructed and rehabilitated, and interventions aimed at improving the welfare of vulnerable communities have been expanded across the state.
What makes these achievements even more remarkable is that they were accomplished amidst prevailing economic and governance challenges. Yet, through prudent management of resources, unwavering dedication, and a clear vision for a greater Kano, His Excellency has remained focused on delivering results rather than rhetoric.
As we celebrate this important milestone, we acknowledge that the journey towards a more prosperous, inclusive, and globally competitive Kano continues. The successes recorded over the past three years serve as a strong indication that the administration's development agenda is on course and that even greater achievements lie ahead.
On behalf of myself and countless beneficiaries of this transformational leadership, I congratulate His Excellency on three impactful years of service to the people. May Allah (SWT) continue to grant him wisdom, strength, good health, and divine guidance as he advances the task of building a better Kano for present and future generations.
