#WATCH | Kolkata, West Bengal: On former Kolkata Mayor Firhad Hakim denies role in Taratala warehouse incident, Suspended TMC Spokesperson Riju Dutta says, "... What the former Mayor has said is not wrong. When a plan is submitted for sanction, engineers check it first. It then moves up to the Commissioner and finally to the Mayor, whose signature is required for approval. However, the Mayor may not know the details of the plan — permissions are granted by the Kolkata Municipal Corporation. If poor‑quality materials used in construction or unskilled workers are employed, buildings can collapse, causing deaths. In this case, five arrests have been made, and 14 people have died. The Chief Minister has announced in the Assembly that a high-level SIT has been formed, and if the Mayor’s name appears in the investigation, action will be taken. The controversy deepens as a former Mayor has recently become Chairman of the Public Accounts Committee, even while accountability for the tragedy is being sought. Also, Kalicharan Banerjee was the Mayor’s OSD (Officer on Special Duty), and no file was passed without his approval and projects over Rs100 crore had to go through him..."

As far as CREDAI members are concerned, I want to clarify that they strictly follow the code of conduct, national laws, rules, and building industry norms. For any building, soil testing is done, and recommendations from geotechnical engineers determine the bearing capacity and structural plan. RCC files, pile caps, and framework are designed accordingly. High‑rise buildings of 35–50 floors have been built under proper planning and supervision, and even earthquakes have not affected them. The Taratala incident is different. Illegal buildings, often built by ordinary contractors without supervision or expertise, using poor‑quality materials, lead to such accidents..."
