I still have a vivid memory of swimming with my friends in the Thenpennai River and Gadilam River as a teenager.
Still a long way to go for flood management, but I am happy that my friends and I are making the first step with Chennai Flood Modellers.
December 9,2024
Historic heavy rainfall over the Thenpennaiyar River basin, intensified by Cyclone Fengal, and subsequent releases from Sathanur Reservoir have caused widespread flooding. Overflow from the Thenpennai,Gadilam and Malatar rivers has severely impacted numerous villages, as highlighted on the map.
Considering the implications of climate change, there is a likelihood of similar extreme rainfall events occurring in the future. To effectively mitigate the impact in these flood-prone regions and manage potential disasters in the future, our team is actively working to provide valuable insights before the next event occurs. We encourage you to stay updated on rainfall and flood-related information by following official updates through the TNAlert app.
This proactive approach can help protect lives, infrastructure, and livelihoods in these vulnerable areas.
We will continue running simulations for potential December events and share timely updates here.
Here is the list which shows the villages affected based on field observation by our team (https://t.co/Tv5D3R2pOD... ).If any villages are missed,Kindly let us know in comments.

Dr. Nithila Devi (GFZ Potsdam, Germany) has conducted a study on the role of lakes in flood management. Their key findings are as follows:
Water bodies such as lakes, ponds, and tanks play a vital role in controlling floods, especially when their initial water storage levels are low. In this context, it is crucial to properly manage these water bodies. Additionally, desilting them can increase their water storage capacity, thereby significantly reducing flood impacts.
Such strategically managed water bodies can also help mitigate flood risks caused by urbanization. However, if these lakes and ponds are urbanized in the future, even rainfall as low as 20–25 cm could increase the risk of severe floods in chennai similar to the devastating 2015 floods .

Cyclone #Fengal impacting the Thenpennai River between Sathanur Dam & Cuddalore. 🌊
Check out the depth map showing areas affected by the water flow until 2 am today.
Looks like it’ll take a day for the river to start calming down. #CycloneImpact#ThenpennaiRiver#FloodUpdate
