@BurnsideMath Hi, Abi DeCerbo! I answered all these questions backwards. One thing I RETRIEVED from chapter 1 is the idea of students having to see things 3 times in 3 different ways before it starts moving into long term memory. #retrievalpracrice
@BurnsideMath Thanks @BurnsideMath for hosting this! We really got some great, practical tools to use in the classroom & very interesting research data to support it.
@BurnsideMath A3: I am going to implement the challenge grids and the cops/robbers this year & continue w/the other tools I’ve already been using like brain dump, flash cards, walkaround bingo. I have more flexibility with A&P, so I’m excited to try these new strategies. #retrievalpractice
@BurnsideMath A2: We use a ton of flashcards in A&P and Bio, it’s like taking a whole new language but I like the idea of making going thru them each day and separating them in boxes to see which ?s they still need reviewing. Will definitely try that this yr. #retrievalpractice
@BurnsideMath Q4: I would like to know ways to get students to do retrieval practice (honestly) for HW. I feel like even if we keep HW low or no stakes, students will use whatever source they have available to finish the assignment. Any suggestions other than honor code? #retrievalpractice
@BurnsideMath A&P and Bio are great subjects for diagrams, comic strips, etc. i use them on a daily for body processes, biological processes, different structures, etc. #retrievalpractice
@BurnsideMath A4: The main question I have is time. I feel like many of the strategies will take plenty of class time in order for it to be effective. With Anatomy (not tested), I can afford to slowdown and try new things, I’m concerned about a tested subject. #retrievalpractice
@BurnsideMath Because the brain dumps are little more focused bc I include a prompt, we share out responses or they share with their tablemates and do a quick go around the room. #retrievalpractice
@BurnsideMath I like Quizlet live but it ends up taking longer than I want it to, and there is always that group that struggles and then lose interest. I have mixed feelings about Quizizz. #RetrievalPractice
@BurnsideMath A4: I’m a data girl so I love reading the research or at least the summaries. Finding the time to actually go out & get the literature & then reading them is my biggest obstacle, so I love that list idea. #retrievalpractice
@MsTomlinsonBHS Same 🙌🏽🙌🏽 my students moan and groan in the beginning of the year (some all year 🤣) when it’s a no notes activity. My famous line in the classroom is “No Notes, Just Your Brains”. I get many an eye-roll but eventually they get used to it.
@BurnsideMath A3: The key takeaway for me is the idea of the power of 3. Students need at least 3 times to be encounter the material before understanding the concept. And it needs to be presented in different ways. That will be a planning challenge. #retrievalpractice
@BurnsideMath I’m always telling my students you can’t keep studying what you already know. I think #retrievalpractice will help mitigate some of that once students know how to implement it.
@BurnsideMath This quote from the book was so real “students experience illusions of competence while studying and these illusions have significant consequences for the strategies students select when they monitor & regulate their own learning”.
