It has been upsetting & worrying to see the ignorance @ludawinthesky & @maysoonzayid received for speaking about being disabled this weekend. So we are starting a campaign called #DisabledAnd. Take a photo & tell the world your passions, job etc like our founder @chroniccampaign!
Apologies for my absence, I've had some personal problems and emergencies that I've had to focus on. How about we restart with some positive experiences?! What good practice have you seen in the #CharitySector around supporting #DisabledPeople? #CharitySoAbled#NotJustNCVO
3: "I’m very lucky now that I have found a job that is part-time but also #flexible & home-based. But things have been much worse – I’ve been through warnings & threats to fire me because of the days off I’ve needed to take for my conditions." #CharitySoAbled#CharitySector
2: “In 2015, I applied for #PIP – I got zero points because I walked up two steps when - the only way to get to the room. They didn’t offer any alternatives or ask if it hurt… in 2019 I applied again & was awarded by someone who understood my condition.” #CharitySoAbled
Annon 1: After suffering for years, I was finally diagnosed with #ME & later with fibro. The severity changes daily (sometimes hourly!), but I can usually tell if it’s going to be a good/ bad day. I’ve had a lot of jobs who believed there’s nothing wrong with me.” #CharitySoAbled
Thank you @RosieOldham8 - completely agree! Employment law needs to change to accommodate disabled people! Yes- current employment laws don't follow the social model and need to be updated! HR teams also need to be trained in ableism at the bare min #CharitySoAbled#CharitySector
Completely agree! Flexible home-based positions offer more opportunities for disabled people! Many of us are housebound or have fluctuating conditions which means that flexibility is so important! It opens up the job market! Thank you @MandiMooHine for sharing! #CharitySoAbled
Today we are going to be sharing how you can be a better ally this #DisabilityPrideMonth!
1. Always add alt text (short written descrip.) to your images & a separate image description (see below). Alt text allows readers with visual disabilities to access images #CharitySoAbled
A4: Other innovative flexible working policies could be found through an away day to understand each other's needs, get to know each other around inclusion & find out what works for each person. Many people don't even realise they could benefit from flexible working #CharityHour
A4: As odd as it sounds I think one of the most innovative things you can do is ask what someone needs and be accommodating to those flexible working needs (maybe not if these ask for free ice cream every day;)) New policies could be framed around your team's needs #CharityHour
