Having conversations over a coffee with elderly Ethiopian couples recently gave me a striking perspective on how the older generation felt and continued to feel regarding Ethiopia’s isolation from Red Sea.
The problem has not merely lingered but it has been marinated in silence, festering as a collective scar on Ethiopia’s generational consciousness. It remains a wound inherited rather than understood, with few grasping the deeper geostrategic injustice behind it or identifying who engineered it, how and to what end.
Some with no or less awareness of historical facts wants us to worry and argue that a new conflict between Ethiopia and Eritrea is imminent.
I argue differently, the war never truly ended it merely entered a phase of deferral. It began when the TPLF and EPLF Marxist, ethno-nationalist guerrilla movements were ushered into Addis Ababa under U.S. arrangements during the London Conference.
What followed was a sham referendum under pretense of act of self-determination that amputated Ethiopia’s historic territory and cut the ancient nation off from its Red Sea coast and sow a seed of injustice and war.
Ethiopia’s historic adversaries wagered that internal division and ideological fragmentation would keep the country subdued, divided, distracted and permanently landlocked. They miscalculated. It was inevitable that Ethiopians would awaken to the reality that their isolation from the sea was the result of deliberate geopolitical design. And once that realization takes root, it becomes a matter of timing for righting this historical injustice.
The Abiy administration has had its own share of misunderstandings of this reality or opting for political expediency in its early years, a misstep that it sought tactical alliances with those whose very existence is antithesis to Ethiopias nation state, driven by political expediency rather than strategic clarity.
Yet, recent developments indicate encouraging shift in perception and projection. It has become that the EPLF problem cannot be deferred any longer. It has also become self evident that the matter is not simply a border dispute or a matter of sea access, but the vey survival of the nation state tied to internal stability and geo-strategic urgency.
There is no looming war, only a deferred one whose logic has now matured. The awareness spreading among the Ethiopian public makes it clear that the EPLF’s problem must be confronted head-on.
The illusion of stability has run its course. The EPLF’s rigid Marxist and ethno-nationalist orientation, reinforced by decades of external backing from Arab sponsors, has rendered genuine compromise unattainable. Repeated attempts to establish a stable or cooperative framework have failed, not for lack of effort, but because the ideological and geopolitical foundations of the Eritrean regime make reconciliation structurally impossible.
The reality is that the situation has reached its natural limit. The reckoning has finally arrived not as a matter of choice, but as the inevitable consequence of unresolved historical injustice and accumulated strategic miscalculations.
@LaetitiaBader@hrw Well, I'll be damned! Laetitias favorite ethno-fascist rebel group is ruining her lucrative pay-to-play gig and making it harder to render her usual interference duties.
Poor Letay! 😝
@FanoRising Ahh, The best and brightest of the Amhara diaspora advocacy, literally a deadbeat Shabia, grinning in front of a bunch of flags and LARPing as a lobbyist to keep the grift on for the fictitious struggle. 🤣
@martinplaut A bitter old man with a couple of active followers on his blog post still unrelenting with unsolicited and out of touch geopolitical opeds.
Give it a rest, geezer! Nobody really gives a squat what you think. Jeez! 🙄
@JegnaAnbessa 50M plus citizens went out from dusk to dawn to elect the same government you're desperately trying to denigrate.
Ethiopians want nothing to do with Ethno chauvinists such as yourself who wrap their maligned desires in a patriotic facade.
Cry harder, ethno-fascist loser!
@DanielsonKassa1 Another totally reliable source, who chose to remain anonymous, told another legit source that Tommy has demonstrated a tendency for self harm and has been put on genocide watch list.
Oops, I meant to say suicide watch.
@Alex_Oloyede2 After four years of US led war against their nation, Russian commentators are still winning, the US is being mean to them. Get over it, FFS. What kind of retardation is this?
@firasmodad No, they wouldn't! Chucking five to ten drones into an abandoned building in the outskirts of Kiev that detonate like firecrackers and spending the rest of the week making apology tours doesn't count as retaliation. Brave soldiers at the front, pathetic leadership at the top.
@Ternafi Ethiopia's massive nationwide tree-planting campaign, the Green Legacy Initiative (GLI), was honored by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) with an international recognition award in the category of Sustainable Forest Management and Utilization.
@martinplaut She can do her duplicitous scrutiny in the safety of the new European Reich, where quality of life is taking a nose-dive, the indignant masses riots at every gathering and dissidents get prosecuted for divergent opinions or unauthorized Memes.
Kudos to the Ethiopian government.
@SirakBahlbi Anyways, it's long past time to coddle your unscrupulous fiefdom with pleasantries and earnest engagement. We just gonna take it back and face the music.
@SirakBahlbi You're being intentionally obtuse about our discernible inquisitions. We're not interested in commercial maritime acquisitions or offering a gravy train for opportunistic costal states. Ethiopia is demanding a naval presence and sovereign sea access.
