A Muslim said, “Nowhere in the Bible did Jesus say He was a Christian or even mention Christianity. Paul founded Christianity. You people are following Paul, not Jesus.”

So I asked, “Do you actually know what Christianity means first?” 😂

He said, “It’s Paul’s religion. Jesus has nothing to do with Christianity.”

I said, “Bro, if you’re going to argue about something, at least step outside the box and do some research first. You have the internet. Browse. Search. Ask questions. 😂”

Him: repeats the same thing Christianity was founded by Paul. Jesus didn’t follow Christianity.

Omg I didn’t waste more time with this one. It ended pretty quickly.

Christianity literally means following Christ.

Now explain this to me: How exactly was Jesus supposed to follow Himself? 😂

“Hello, I am Jesus, and today I have decided to become a Christian because I want to follow Jesus.”

Only Muslims think like this. I’m tired.

Jesus is Christ. Christians are the people who follow Christ. The word “Christian” describes the followers of Jesus; it is not supposed to be a label Jesus needed to apply to Himself.

Paul did not create Christianity. He joined a Christian movement that was already established by Jesus and His apostles.

In Antioch, the disciples were first called “Christians” because of the way they lived and identified themselves with Christ. The Greek word Christianos (Χριστιανός) means essentially “a follower of Christ” or ���one who belongs to Christ.”

Paul was not the founder of Christianity, he became one of its most influential apostles after encountering Jesus and being commissioned to preach the gospel.

One thing I wish more Nigerians understood: Christianity did not stop at the Niger.

Sometimes the way we talk about Nigeria makes it sound like Christianity belongs to the South and Islam belongs to the North.

Real life has never been that neat.

I am a Northern Christian girl.

I grew up knowing that Christianity is part of my Northern reality, just as Islam is part of the reality of millions of my fellow Northerners.

And this matters because stereotypes don’t just get geography wrong.

They erase people.

A Northern Christian child can grow up thinking, “People like me are invisible.”

A Southern Nigerian can genuinely be surprised that there are Christian communities in the North.

And a Northern Muslim can sometimes forget that the woman standing beside them in the market, office, school or neighbourhood may be Christian.

We have lived together for generations.

Our stories overlap.

Our identities are complicated.

So no, I don’t want to turn Northern Nigeria into a religious argument.

I simply want room for the truth.

The North is not one religion.
The North is not one tribe.
The North is not one kind of woman.

And I am proof.

I am a Northern girl. But I am not the Northern girl you imagined.

When people hear “Northern Nigeria,” many immediately picture a Muslim Hausa woman.

That woman exists.

But so do I.

I am a Northern girl. I am Christian. I am not Hausa. I am Laka/Godogodo.

And sometimes explaining that feels like I am introducing myself three times before people finally understand where I come from.

The problem is that Northern Nigeria has been reduced to one religion, one language, one culture and one kind of woman.

But the North is not one people.

There are Christians. Traditionalists. Muslims. Indigenous ethnic groups. Minority languages. Women who wear hijab and women who don’t. Women who grew up in churches. Women who grew up in mosques. Women whose grandparents spoke languages most Nigerians have never even heard of.

We exist.

And I think one reason many people don’t know we exist is because we haven’t told our stories loudly enough.

So yes, I am a Northern girl.

Just not the version of Northern Nigeria you were taught to imagine.
