I have just come across this old interview of Mallam Nasir El-Rufai.

In the video, El-Rufai said that the problem with some Southern Kaduna elites is that they have their own established narrative, and whether it is true or false, they stick to it. and, anyone who says something contrary to that narrative is immediately seen as having taken sides.

He went further to say that even amongst them, anyone who is moderate or genuinely promotes peaceful coexistence between the different ethnic and religious groups can easily be considered a sellout.

Interestingly, he mentioned that this was one of the issues that allegedly frustrated his former Deputy Governor to the point where he decided he no longer wanted to remain Deputy Governor and instead chose to pursue the Senate.

El-Rufai also said something about how previous governments handled crises and influential actors in Southern Kaduna, and how the fact that he couldn’t continue is why they won’t like him.

He said there was a culture of appeasement that had existed for years, that whenever there was trouble, violence or killings, some of the same people would eventually be invited by the government to whine and dine, and be given brown envelopes.

In his words, this had allegedly been the pattern for about 20 years before his administration came into office, which the video I quoted confirmed.

He said when his government came in, they decided that the era of appeasing people simply because they could cause trouble was over.

He said nobody who did not encourage peaceful coexistence would have access to him as Governor simply because they represented a particular ethnic or religious interest.

He also said his administration was using security agencies to carefully monitor and map those it believed were involved in organising violence, with the intention of gathering enough evidence to eventually prosecute them.

He said he would not appease criminals or people who had nothing to offer society except raising the spectre of genocide and crisis in order to attract international attention and donations.

Perhaps the most striking part of the interview was his claim that previous governments were allegedly paying some of these individuals what he described as “Peace Money” every month. According to El-Rufai, his administration stopped it, and that was one of the major reasons he was constantly accused of taking sides.

Now, you may disagree with Mallam Nasir El-Rufai politically. You may disagree with some of his decisions as Governor. You may even disagree completely with the allegations he made in this video.

But this is where the quoted video becomes important.

This was not a narrative he suddenly invented today because of his current political battles, the issue of Southern Kaduna leaders organizing killings in Southern Kaduna has been proven in court, and a ruling was gotten from it.

And when you put this interview alongside the historical records we have been discussing, including the events surrounding the 1992 crisis, the subsequent prosecution of prominent figures and the decades of ethnic and religious tension that existed before El-Rufai ever became Governor, it reinforces everything he alleged.

Kaduna’s religious and ethnic crisis did not start with Mallam Nasir El-Rufai. The divisions were already there. The competing narratives were already there. The influential actors were already there. The politics surrounding ethnic and religious violence were already deeply established.

El-Rufai simply entered a Kaduna that had already experienced decades of complicated ethnic and religious tensions.

So when people today attempt to reduce the entire history of Kaduna’s crises to El-Rufai and his administration, they are either ignoring history or deliberately refusing to acknowledge it.

This old video does not mean that El-Rufai was perfect, neither does it mean that his administration should not be criticised where criticism is necessary.

The family of Mallam Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai, the former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), former Governor of Kaduna State and Opposition Leader of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has noted with serious concern the allegations made by General Christopher Musa (Rtd.), Minister of Defence, on 3 September 2026 during a live television broadcast of Politics Today on Channels Television. During the programme, General Musa alleged that Mallam Nasir El-Rufai actively planned killings in Southern Kaduna while serving as Governor of Kaduna State.

This grave allegation was made without the presentation of any evidence in support of the claim. While General Musa (Rtd.) is entitled to hold and express his personal opinions, the El-Rufai family is equally entitled to demand that such serious allegations be substantiated with credible evidence.

In the absence of such evidence, we call on him to publicly retract the allegation through the same medium on which it was made. Accordingly, General Musa (Rtd.) is hereby given seven (7) days from the date of this statement to either provide evidence in support of his allegation or issue a full public retraction and apology.

Failure to do so will leave the family with no option but to pursue all appropriate legal remedies available under the law in response to these unsubstantiated allegations.

I know the history of the Kataf crisis so much that even if you wake me up from sleep my account be near flawless and I once challenged @Olusegunverdict on the media attempts to recreate the content to fit into some predetermined narratives

The crisis in Southern Kaduna started before @elrufai ever became a politician when Zamani Lekwot and his Kataf militants instigated an ethnic cleaning project in Southern Kaduna that led to the slaughtering of thousands of innocent citizens

That earned him a death sentence by Justice Benedict Okadigbo tribunal in 1993 that was later commuted to a prison term and pardon in 1995 under General Abacha

Was @elrufai the Governor in May 1992?

But here is what is even more hypocritical about this subject; the issue of “power sharing” and how the Lagos/Ibadan toxic media axis pushed a single narrative suggesting a one way unleashing of violence

The population of Kaduna State is predominantly Muslim, probably 80/20, I am talking about the indigenous population, not “residents” from other parts of Nigeria

Why is it right for Plateau State with a large population of Muslims to have Christian Christian government (Governor/Deputy) and wrong for Kaduna to have Muslim Muslim government (Governor/Deputy)?

What is even more ironic? The current deputy Governor in Kaduna State is from Southern Kaduna or are Southern Kaduna Muslims not human beings?

Most of those promoting the toxic outburst of a Christian extremist like Christopher Gwabin do not have issues with the Muslim Muslim ticket at the Villa but have issues with Muslim Muslim ticket in Kaduna

But more frightening is the notoriety of Christopher Gwabin in lying, watch his several interviews where he claimed 120,000 Boko Haram terrorists surrendered and 60,000 were children

At a time when some Governors are openly considering negotiations with bandits, it is important to remember where Mallam Nasir El-Rufai stood on the issue. His position was clear, these criminals should not be rewarded with dialogue or concessions, they should be confronted decisively and eliminated.

Today, under Christopher Musa, first as Chief of Defence Staff and now as Minister of Defence, Nigerians witnessed what could arguably be described as one of the most pronounced periods of various governments engagement and dialogue with bandits.

We saw disturbing images of military officials openly shaking hands with terrorists, alongside state governors, all in the name of dialogue and reconciliation.

And what has that approach achieved?

It has not brought an end to the violence. Children were abducted in Borno over four months ago, yet we are still waiting for their safe return. Just yesterday, Funtua came under attack by bandits, Niger, Kebbi, Kwara, and “our people” of Southern Kaduna

You chose dialogue over the decisive action El-Rufai advocated, and the results have hardly justified that strategy.

Yet today, the same Christopher Musa is attempting to associate Mallam Nasir El-Rufai with allegations that he planned the killing of “our people.”

Mr Chris, before throwing such grave accusations around, perhaps some introspection is necessary. You cannot spend years pursuing dialogue with the very criminals terrorising Nigerians, preside over an administration struggling to contain the insecurity, and then turn around to make El-Rufai the convenient scapegoat.

Again, have some shame, Mr Chris.

One deluded entity of Southern Kaduna extraction said to me that they will meet me in court, adding, "we will present our evidence in court". I do not know who he meant by "we", because it was one person who regurgitated burukutu talk as facts on national television.

Yes, indeed, we shall well meet in court soon, but he does not have to wait till then.

I challenge this delusional individual and indeed all of them Southern Kaduna creeps crawling around my wall exhibiting their lack of home training and their hypochristianity to produce one clean sourced video evidence of where and when Mallam Nasir @elrufai ever said "HE PAID BANDITS".

JUST ONE.

Because some persons have no good reputation and do not know what it takes to build one, they think they can just try to damage someone else's hard built reputation, call it politics and get away with it. Not anymore.

It has been smelling for a while now that someone would likely be used to teach other El-Rufai haters and bashers a lesson. Probably, we have the biggest fish yet for that.

Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, sometimes around 2016/2017, gave a detailed explanation about how his words were twisted by a newspaper to say he is paying terrorists.

If this is what the General means by El-Rufai doing "a lot of terrible things", "paying banďîts" and not ever being happy with "someone who deliberately planned for the kîllîng" of his people, then I must say that the man is very slow, low and very poor in the head.
