The General Rotary knew: A tribute to CDF Francis Ogolla Earlier this year, Rotary needed to host an event and we had this ambitious idea to hold it at Ulinzi Sports Complex in Langata. I and a few Rotarians decided to pay General Ogolla a visit. From the moment we walked into his office, he treated us like VVIP guests. The General was warm and very welcoming. As a civilian, I was abit nervous. In fact, I spent the previous night reading about Military protocol and titles. During our meeting, one thing stood out for me as we interacted. The General listened. He allowed us to talk without interruption. He asked questions in a way that made us feel like we had known him for years. He said he had heard about Rotary and Rotarians but no one had spent time explaining what we do so this was his chance to “grill us - gently”. We took advantage of the opportunity to tell him what we do and at that point we placed our request. We wanted him to allow Rotary to use Ulinzi Sports Complex as a venue for the Rotary Sunshine Rally, an event that brings together differently abled children from all over the country for a day of fun. Without hesitation, the General said YES and added, “you will not be charged!” However, he was very curious about how we handle the logistics of such events. We took him through the details and he teased us that we can now relax since the venue would make it much easier for us and his men would help with a few aspects of logistics. Just by listening and saying YES, General Ogolla allowed over 7,000 differently-abled children to have an experience of a life-time. On the day of the event, he sent me a message wishing us well and showing his support. That is who the General was. He followed things through to the end. Rotary experienced General Ogolla first-hand. We honor him. We will forever remember his kindness and generosity. Fare thee well General Francis Omondi Ogolla. Heroes never die.
