Before I became a PM-in-training, I thought project managers just... told people what to do.
Turns out, that's the least of it.
A PM is the person who makes sure:
→ Everyone knows what "done" looks like
→ The budget doesn't quietly disappear

5/ Quality: Perfectly cooked jollof that arrives late isn't a win. Neither is fast jollof that's burnt. PM is balancing scope, time, budget, AND quality all at once.

4/ Timeline: Rice needs to be ready before the guests arrive, not after. Every project has a deadline that isn't flexible, no matter how good the final result is.

3/ Budget: Tomatoes, pepper, rice, chicken, gas it all costs something. A PM tracks this the same way you'd track your ingredient spend. Run out of budget halfway and the "project" stalls.

2/ Scope: What exactly are you cooking? Party jollof for 50 people is a different project than jollof for your Sunday lunch. Define it before you start, or you'll be improvising with rice you didn't buy enough of.

5/ How to catch it early:
→ Get scope agreed in writing before you start
→ Flag any new request against the original plan
→ Ask: does this change the timeline or budget? If yes, it's not "small"

4/ It rarely comes as one big change. It's usually small: "just add this," "can we also include that," "shouldn't take long." Each one seems harmless alone.

3/ Jollof rice example: You agreed to cook for 20 people. Halfway through, someone says "oh, invite 10 more friends too." Same pot. Same gas. Same amount of rice you bought. That's scope creep.
