POP POP POP! —— The History of $POPCAT, from Meme to Crypto Legend
Popcat is probably one of the few top-tier memes that remains popular on the Chinese internet today. Compared to the panda head sticker packs that are more prevalent in China, Popcat frequently appears in all sorts of parody videos, thanks to its addictive animation of a mouth opening and closing. But what I didn't know was that this cat's journey from a video clip to a global clicking game, and finally to a memecoin, was far more convoluted than I had imagined.
「It all started with a cat named Oatmeal」
2020-10-09: A user named Xavier posted a short video of his cat, Oatmeal, on Twitter. In the video, Oatmeal was looking at a bug, its mouth forming an adorable "O" shape. At this point, it hadn't attracted much attention. (Original video at the end of the article)
2020-10-12: A netizen created a GIF from two images of Oatmeal with its mouth open and closed. Later, someone else added the iconic "Pop" sound to this GIF, and with that, a perfect meme was born. From late 2020 to early 2021, this GIF with sound became active across various social media platforms, turning into a popular sticker. The attention was still moderate at this stage, but the emergence of the sticker was a crucial turning point for Popcat's rise to fame.
「The Tipping Point: The Birth of https://t.co/KSTUw9nICr」
2020-12: The beginning of the explosion. Three university students in the UK, out of interest, created a simple little website: https://t.co/KSTUw9nICr. The site had only one thing on it: that classic Popcat GIF. Every time a user clicked the mouse, the cat's mouth would open with a "pop" sound, and a counter at the bottom of the screen would increase by one. It was originally just a small game, but the developers then added a stroke of genius: a global leaderboard for countries/regions based on the user's IP address, successfully transforming an individual pastime into a matter of collective honour.
「A Global Frenzy: A "World War of Clicks" 」
The official Twitter account went live in February and first exploded in popularity in Brazil, reaching a million clicks for the first time. It then took off in Finland, hitting 3 billion clicks, to the point where schools banned the game. By August, the Tokyo Olympics had captured the world's attention, and this global enthusiasm ignited a new wave of Popcat fever. From then on, Asia became the main battleground. Thailand took the lead, clicking day and night to dominate the leaderboard; later, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and others successively claimed the top spot, sparking a worldwide "clicking wave". To this day, the global click count has surpassed 650 billion.
「Behind the Craze: A Reflection of Social Sentiment」
One point worth noting is that the frantic participation of the Thai people wasn't purely for entertainment (and let's be honest, tapping a screen isn't that entertaining). It was more like a reflection of social sentiment and an expression of political demands. At the time, Thailand was at the peak of the pandemic, and pressures like economic downturn and mass unemployment left people, especially the youth, in desperate need of an emotional outlet (writing this, I feel a strange sense of familiarity). The emergence of Popcat was perfectly timed; this absurd global competition provided people with a low-cost, entertaining way to protest and show solidarity. Tapping the screen gave a sense of "bringing glory to the nation," and so it became a tool for countless people to release stress, seek comfort, and express a sense of collective identity.
「Birth of $POPCAT 」
2023-12-12: After Popcat had already built a deep cultural foundation and user base worldwide, the IP was finally used to launch a coin. On 12 December, $POPCAT was officially issued. At the start, the team put 93.1% of the tokens into the liquidity pool and burned the LP permissions, with 6.9% reserved for future listings and liquidity management, held in a multi-sig wallet. In its initial phase, $POPCAT didn't make huge waves, considered just a decent shitcoin, with everything still quietly brewing.
「Sudden Turmoil – The Developers' Betrayal」
Mid-December 2023: About a week after its launch, popcat's market cap surged to $50m. Then, the developer suddenly announced a plan to release an NFT collection for personal gain: 3,000 pieces, each priced at 1.5 SOL. Releasing NFTs isn't necessarily that objectionable in itself, but the problem was that the developer used it to threaten the community: if the community didn't support the NFT sale, he would maliciously alter the token's metadata. This was something I hadn't seen before. I looked into it, and it turns out that after a token is issued, the developer still has the power to change basic information like the token's name and logo, unless they renounce that power—which this developer clearly hadn't. This threat caused intense outrage in the community, and in the end, he actually did change the name—to "Fuck off and support the nfts." As soon as the news broke, market confidence collapsed instantly. The token's price plummeted from a $50m market cap to $10m within two days, bringing the project to the brink of death for the first time.
2023-12-24: At this critical juncture, the community didn't just stand by. To save the project, several early core members joined forces to "force an abdication". In the end, community leader Jpeggler bought out the contract's control and all social media accounts for $35,000. He then immediately renounced the contract permissions. With that, Popcat officially completed its community takeover (CTO), becoming a truly community-driven memecoin. Through this ordeal, the community didn't fall apart; instead, it emerged stronger after being tested by fire. To quote a community member, "Hats off to Jpeggler. None of this would have been possible without him. We all shared a common vision, and he was the one who lit the first flame." Although the meme world is full of hype, scams, and fraud, there are always those who strive to protect this fragile ecosystem, quietly pushing forward the development and continuation of meme culture. A heartfelt salute to these OGs!
「Riding the Wave, the Cat Craze Sweeps In」
2024-04: Entering April, the market witnessed a full-blown explosion of the "cat coin" sector. Driven by the community's strength, Popcat's market cap, after a brief correction at the end of March, surged dramatically in mid-April, rocketing from a low of $100m to an ATH of $700m. Google Trends at the time showed that search interest for "Popcat" from 21-27 April hit a new high, even surpassing the historical peak during the 2021 game era. The number of holder addresses also continued to soar, eventually reaching around 45,000, a testament to the powerful community synergy forged after the crisis. The entire cat coin sector was incredibly strong during the same period:
mew led the pack at $600m (rumoured to have VC backing, so not a pure meme);
popcat steadily climbed at $400m;
mog was in a correction at $250m;
wen/toshi at $200m;
maneki at $180m (VC-backed +1);
michi at $100m.
「Embers Still Warm, a Shadow Returns」
2024-05: As the community grew stronger and the market cap higher, a new problem emerged—copyright issues. Someone questioned whether Popcat was using Oatmeal's image without permission. Subsequently, the cat's owner, Xavier, publicly stated on Twitter, "My cat is my cat, and I am completely against cryptocurrency." This statement poured cold water on the community. Last time it was the developer threatening to change the metadata, with a sort of "I hold the copyright, I'm in charge" attitude, and now this again. What followed was the usual pattern: FUD from the original owner, panic spreading, more and more people raising questions and concerns, and the market cap's steady rise came to a halt.
When it rains, it pours. Another cat coin based on a real cat, Shark Cat, dealt Popcat a heavy blow with a textbook crisis management response. At the time, Shark Cat was also facing copyright questions. After its owner publicly stated on 15 April that they had not given permission, the Shark Cat community team immediately contacted the owner through lawyers and quickly reached a licensing agreement. On 2 May, the owner publicly expressed their support. Shark Cat rebounded in response, soaring from $50m to $200m. More importantly, this act of securing clear copyright gave many people a reason to get involved, directly causing some funds and attention to flow to Shark Cat. Regardless of its subsequent performance, in the handling of this "copyright issue," Popcat undoubtedly fumbled, whereas the Shark Cat community's actions were decisive and brilliant. Meanwhile, this battle for the title of "the one true cat king" made the entire cat coin sector exceptionally hot.
「When Memes Meet VCs – Ansem's Shenanigans」
Market Context: In the first half of 2024, the market was flooded with projects backed by top VCs. This "insiders get in first" + "leaders get out first" model left countless retail investors complaining bitterly. Then, something happened that ignited emotions—Ansem moved to trademark MOG. In May, someone discovered that Ansem's company had filed a trademark application for "MOG" with the United States Patent and Trademark Office—yes, that mogcoin. This action was interpreted as Ansem preparing to privatise the MOG brand. If the application succeeded, it would mean he could control the use of the MOG brand and exclusively enjoy its commercial benefits, and community governance would cease to exist. Although a minority of supporters saw it as a necessary step for memes to become more professional and institutionalised, the vast majority of community members viewed it as a betrayal. (So, was Ansem acting out of self-interest, or for the better development of MOG? Only he knows. There's an interesting comment on the situation at the time: When Ansem, this seemingly upstanding "community leader," also engaged in this kind of VC-like harvesting of the community, the community's anger was completely ignited.)
2024-05: The anti-VC fury sparked by the MOG incident quickly spread to the cat coin sector. Many began to question whether venture capital firms were also manipulating certain cat coins, such as mew and maneki, which were rumoured to have received VC investment and had overly concentrated holdings. Besides, their charts hardly looked like those of a meme coin (reaching $300m+ on the first day). In contrast, Popcat and Michi, having weathered multiple storms and being entirely community-driven, were seen as representatives of the "grassroots spirit" and gained broader support. For a time, the "community camp" and the "VC camp" began attacking each other in the media: it was reported that whenever someone tweeted about $POPCAT, a large number of bots would immediately reply, recommending buying MANEKI or MEW. This overly blunt smear campaign, however, only strengthened the Popcat community's cohesion. After being baptised by crisis after crisis, Popcat was no longer just a memecoin, but a banner for the community's resistance against capital, continuing its journey on a winding road.
「A Milestone Moment – The Cat King's Coronation!」
2024-09-25: $POPCAT had its coronation moment. Multiple media outlets jointly reported that Popcat had become the first cat coin across all chains to break a $1 billion market cap. And this was just the beginning of a new sprint.
2024-10: After the ups and downs of the summer, cat season returned. In early October, Popcat's price skyrocketed by 78% within a month, firmly establishing itself above a $1 billion market cap. It then rode this momentum, breaking through barriers with the combined force of the market and the community, reaching a peak market cap of $2 billion on 13 November, becoming the seventh-largest meme. Still, apart from the two monsters, it was second only to wif, bonk, pepe, and floki. At the same time, its exceptionally brilliant performance far outshone the dog coins of the period, causing the "cats over dogs" narrative to gain traction. Popcat's cultural influence also reached its zenith at this point—not only did it bring the cat image to the centre of the crypto stage, but it also drove a rally in a host of copycat cat coins. This moment, for all community members who witnessed Popcat's growth, was one to remember and be proud of. Along the way, having experienced the developers' backstabbing, FUD from the owner, and strong competition from its peers, all the past doubts, worries, and silences were finally overcome. This funny little cat, carrying the purest meme culture and an unyielding grassroots spirit, had arduously walked into the spotlight, becoming the most dazzling presence on the meme stage.
「From Joke to Mainstream: Recognition by Major Platforms」
2024-08-22: Binance Futures list Popcat
2025-02-14: Coinbase lists Popcat
2025-03-13: Robinhood lists Popcat
2025-06-25: Binance US lists Popcat
As a community member lamented: "What was once an internet joke has finally made it onto serious investment platforms." This was not just a victory for Popcat, but a victory for the powerful community consensus behind it.
「Ebb and Flow, the Spirit Endures」
Starting from 2024-11, Like many memes, after reaching its peak, Popcat also experienced a sharp correction. Entering November, as profit-takers sold off and market sentiment cooled, Popcat's price took a nosedive from its high, falling back to $700m within two months. Some early whale holders began to sell and exit. After this, Popcat entered a long-term correction, and the once-high Google search interest also declined. However, during this adjustment, the core Popcat community did not disintegrate. Loyal supporters remained active on social platforms, and a series of real data became the best proof of the community's strength during this difficult period: 150,000 holder addresses, more than eight 80% corrections, consistently in the top three cat coins from the start, and reaching a $2 billion market cap purely through community drive. Behind these cold numbers lies the consensus and collective effort of countless community members.
「The Bond with Dogecoin」
As community member @008Nate said: "From the beginning, we had a bold vision: for cat coins to surpass dog coins." Over its long development, Popcat has become the undisputed leader of the cat coin sector. Its significance has transcended itself, beginning to carry the expectation of building a narrative landscape as vast as that of "dog coins." Although there is still a gap in total market cap, Popcat has undoubtedly driven the rise of the entire cat ecosystem, making it a sector that cannot be ignored in the crypto world.
「The cat that pops」
Today, more than 18 months have passed since Popcat's debut. Although it's no longer as glorious as it was at its peak, it remains the most iconic cat on the chain. From a simple meme image at the beginning to its current position at the centre of the global crypto stage, it is no longer just a token symbol. It is a shared experience of revelry, a collection of countless tweets, clicks, stickers, and jokes. This "little cat" that once made us laugh has now left a deep imprint on the blockchain—it has witnessed the power of community and will be recorded in crypto history as a pure meme culture.
Perhaps, Popcat's story is far from over. After all, the cat that pops—will keep on poppin
